Extremists on Campus (english)

Extremists on Campus
For three decades, left-wing extremists have dominated American academics, spouting odd but seemingly harmless theories about "deconstruction," "post-modernism," "race, gender and class," while venting against the United States, its government and its allies.

Only these ideas are not so harmless. The radical notions espoused in the classrooms and in campus demonstrations have recently had dangerous consequences. These are especially visible with regard to the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Consider some of the steps American professors took during 2002:

* Columbia University: Hamid Dabashi, a specialist on Iran, compared Israel's military maneuvers in Jenin (to prevent future suicide bombings) with the Nazi Holocaust. When one student protested his canceling class to attend a rabidly anti-Israel sit-in, he sneeringly replied, "I apologize if canceling our class in solidarity with [Palestinian] victims of a genocide . . . inconvenienced you."

Joseph Massad, a Jordan specialist at Columbia, spoke at that same anti-Israel rally, calling Israel "a Jewish supremacist and racist state" that, he proclaimed, "should be threatened." This is in addition to a talk with the inflammatory title "On Zionism and Jewish Supremacy" and a course that (students report) served as a soapbox for anti-Israeli polemics.

* SUNY-Binghamton: Robert Ostergard of the political-science department converted his course into an anti-Zionist platform. One guest speaker, Ali Mazrui, presented a lecture that a student called "a 45-minute diatribe against Israel" equating Zionism with fascism, Israel with apartheid South Africa and Prime Minister Ariel Sharon with Hitler.

* Kent State University, Ohio: Julio CÚsar Pino of the history department published an ode to a Palestinian suicide bomber, lauding her courage and calling on Allah to "elevate your place in paradise."

* University of Oregon: In a course entitled "Social Inequality," the sociology department's Douglas Card reportedly called Israel "a terrorist state" and Israelis "baby-killers" and insisted that students agree with his view that Israel "stole land" on the final exam. One student said Card bashed Israel and Jews "at every opportunity."

* UC-Berkeley: The English department's Snehal Shingavi, a leader of "Students for Justice in Palestine," announced a course on "The Politics and Poetics of Palestinian Resistance" with the now-infamous "warning" to conservatives "to seek other sections."

In brief, instructors routinely tout wild-eyed politics and openly wield their authority to indoctrinate students. At times, they even admit this, as in the case of Andrew Ross, the then-Princeton English professor who boasted in 1990 that he was using his position to radicalize "the children of the ruling class."

Not surprisingly, some interpret all this as implicit permission to harass Jewish and pro-Israel students. The result: a wave of verbal and physical attacks.

* At San Francisco State University, anti-Israel students physically threatened students marching for Israel while shouting phrases like, "Die, you racist pigs," and "Hitler should have finished the job," prompting the school's president to admit that he was never "as deeply distressed and angered by something that happened on this campus" in his 14 years there.

Even after this incident, pro-Palestinian students continued to use an SFSU-owned Web page to engage in Holocaust denial and accuse Jews of ritual murder.

* At Berkeley, anti-Israel students occupied a classroom building, leading to the arrest of 79 of them, including one charged with a felony for biting a police officer.

* At the University of Colorado at Boulder, students desecrated an Israeli flag and chalked anti-Semitic slogans on the main campus walkway.

* At the University of Illinois, they assaulted with rocks a home flying an Israeli flag, shattering the front window.

Although professors teaching Middle East-related courses are the most responsible for this degeneration on campus, others, too, are complicit. By indulging the Middle East specialists' radicalism and efforts at indoctrination, alumni, administrators, parents, other faculty, Education Department officials and state legislators effectively condone those activities.

The time has come for all these stakeholders to take back the universities as institutions of civilized discourse. This can be done only by ending the now-regnant atmosphere of extremism and intimidation. The place to start is by condemning and curbing the leftist activism that too often passes for Middle East scholarship

Up to a point (english)
29 Jun 2003
I agree with you gentlemen up to a point. I think you're correct that all too often, instructors' personal points of view are passed off as "Word of Truth" in the lecture halls. This is especially true in relation to emotionally charged topics such as Middle East scholarship.

However, having grown up in the suburbs of Boston during the 70's, I can tell you that I never heard a negative word spoken against Israel. All sympathy was on the side of Israel. The Palestinians, if they were mentioned at all, were only seen in a negative light: terrorists, jew-haters, murderers.

It took many years before I was able to get some semblance of a balanced opinion in regard to the Palestinian/Israeli conflict. Even now, much of the history is so twisted and spun to suit whoever is telling it, that I doubt if anyone really has a clear idea of the situation.

So where do I stand? I really don't know. There is guilt, horror, inhumanity, hatred and blame enough for all. Not just Israel and Palestine, but the US, England, Syria and Jordan to name just a few. We are all of us culpable.

As far as the extremists on campus go, teaching hate is wrong. It doesn't matter whether it comes from the Left, the Right, or straight down the middle. The administrators of the universities should fire anyone who teaches hate and intolerance. ANYONE!

In regard to teaching radically skewed history and politics, the students should vote with their feet. If your prof is full of crap, don't take the class, and complain like hell to the dean, the head of the department and anyone else who'll listen. College is about growing up, learning to think for yourself and gaining not just knowledge, but hopefully a little wisdom. No one can protect you from your own ignorance but you.
EXTREMISTS ON CAMPUS: DANIEL PIPES & ZIONISM (english)

http://boston.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=15061&group=

I see that anti-Arab racist and anti-Muslim bigot Daniel Pipes & Co. are ever busy at their PROPAGANDA MILL. Of course, his Zionist racism is much too well tolerated in the U.S. and a compliant news media reinforces it. If the kind of statements--pontifications--Pipes makes about and/or against Arabs or Muslims were made about Jews or Christians, people would more readily, rightfully, condemn his racist/bigotted attitudes. Most Americans know so little about Arabs or Muslims (even in thinking that the two are equivalent) that a public that is already prone to be racist about Blacks, Latinos and Asians, are quite susceptible--with news media reinforcement--to be racist about Arabs and Muslims.

In this article Pipes doesn't so overtly make his racist/bigoted comments, but satisifies himself with *FALSIFICATIONS*--SIMPLY PUT *LIES* AND DISTORTIONS--ABOUT VARIOUS EVENTS. Underlying this, are Pipes & Co. *real* motivation: TO SLUR AND CENSOR ANY LEGITIMATE POLITICAL CRITICISM OF ISRAEL AND ITS RACIST APARTHEID PRACTICES against the Palestinians as "anti-Semitic". Of course, during South African apartheid, Israel was busy *arming* and *supporting* its virtual sister state, Apartheid South Africa. (The U.S. is Israel's *parent* state--and '51st' state.)

------------------------------------------------------------

I can comment as an eye-witness to a couple of Pipes' lies:

* At San Francisco State University, anti-Israel students physically threatened students marching for Israel while shouting phrases like, "Die, you racist pigs," and "Hitler should have finished the job," prompting the school's president to admit that he was never "as deeply distressed and angered by something that happened on this campus" in his 14 years there.

THIS IS A *BLATANT* LIE! PIPES WASN'T THERE AND NEITHER, OF COURSE, WERE THE VAST MAJORITY OF YOU WHO WILL READ HIS WORDS. I *WAS* THERE. The venue/event that Pipes alludes to was what anti-Zionist Jewish-American Holocaust survivor called a much larger and similar Washington, D.C., event, "a virtual Nuremberg rally" in a sea of blue & white Israeli flags of Zionists against Palestinians (they even planted one on the student union, aparently claiming it as Israeli territory too); this occuring as Ariel Sharon was trying to turn the Palestinian cities/towns of the Occupied Territories into the last days of the Warsaw ghetto. In fact, I was *IN* that sea of Israeli flags as an observer, and what I heard were stunningly racist remarks by many, including mostly older, *middle-aged* Zionist Jews against mostly Palestinian students.

Later, SFSU Jewish Studies director and arch-Zionist Laurie Zoloth not only lied about the event, passing the lie around to every Jewish publication across the country all the way to New York and across the ocean to Israel; she also claimed that the San Francisco Bay Area was--*literally*--on the verge of another Jewish Holocaust!!! Now, what would you say about the probably veracity of anyone who would say that!? The SFSU president was put under VERY HEAVY PRESSURE--like, it's this or your job--by the domestic American Jewish pro-Israel, or Zionist, lobby to go along with these fabricated histrionics.

------------------------------------------------------------

More from Pipes & Co.:

* "Even after this incident, pro-Palestinian students continued to use an SFSU-owned Web page to engage in Holocaust denial and accuse Jews of ritual murder."

I have never heard any Palestinians deny the Jewish Holocaust. Indeed, I have often heard Palestinians, anti-Zionist Jews, and pro-Palestinian human rights supporters, ask *WHY* a people who were, indeed, subjected to the great tradegy of the Jewish Holocaust would, in turn, perpetrate a great tragedy with similar parallels upon another people!!? As Albert Einstein said, "It would be my greatest sadness to see Jews do to [Palestinian] Arabs much of what Nazis did to Jews."

In the San Francisco Bay Area, many Jews (including some Israeli expatriates) *OPPOSE ZIONISM AND THE APARTHEID STATE OF ISRAEL*. Such anti-Zionist Jews have even picketted against the Israeli consulate in San Francisco!

------------------------------------------------------------

Let's hear even more from Pipes & Co.:

* "At Berkeley, anti-Israel students occupied a classroom building, leading to the arrest of 79 of them, including one charged with a felony for biting a police officer."

I *WAS*--*unlike* Pipes-- THERE TOO! The students and community members, including anti-Zionist Jews, staged a *peaceful* sit-in and Gandhian-style acceptance of mass arrest in the middle part of a classroom building lobby at the end of the schoool day. (The protest was so peaceful that everybody, with the possible exception of one, was cited and released at the location or the nearby police station.) No classrooms, other floors, or hallways--unlike the West Bank and the Gaza strip--were occupied. But, the police--always looking for any occasion to overcharge some demonstrator--charged one, a Latino student, who was a member of the campus group "Students for Justice in Palestine", with resisting arrest and biting a police officer. The charge was laughable, videotape showed it was *false*, and later all charges against the Latino student were not only *dropped*, but all records of the charges were legally expunged!

------------------------------------------------------------

Now, let's hear some of Pipes & Co.'s other charges and examine them for *vagueness*:

* "At the University of Illinois, they assaulted with rocks a home flying an Israeli flag, shattering the front window."

*WHO* are "*THEY*"? Was it "*THEY*"--or *ONE* person? Was it a student (and *what* student--an anti-Semitic student, a random student with a personal grudge, a pro-Palestinian student), an aryan-supremacist, some random non-student anti-Semite, some vandalizer with a grudge having nothing to do with Israel or Palestine?

"*THEY*", is left *purposely* vague, but *YOU* are supposed to fill in the blank with "Palestinian supporters", who are, of course, labelled by Pipes as "anti-Semitic".

------------------------------------------------------------

Pipes talks about:

* "...anti-Semitic slogans..."

* "...a wave of verbal and physical attacks..."

* "...bashed Israel and Jews..."

* "...diatribe against Israel..."

* "...intimidation..."

* "...anti-Israeli polemics..."

*NONE* of these vague accusations and innuendos are *SPECIFIC*!

*WHAT* *SPECIFICALLY* were the slogans, verbal attacks, physical attacks, verbal bash[ings], and diatribe[s]?

*WHO*, *SPECIFICALLY* made them?

PIPES & CO. ARE DEPENDING ON ANY ANTI-PALESTINIAN RACISM, PREJUDICES, AND BIGOTRIES OF YOURS AND THE AMERICAN MAINTSTREAM MEDIA TO FILL IN THE BLANKS.

CRITICISM OF--AND POLITICAL OPPOSITION TO--ISRAEL IS NO MORE ANTI-SEMITIC THAN CRITICISM OF AND POLITICAL OPPOSITION TO APARTHEID SOUTH AFRICA OR AMERICAN "JIM CROW" APARTHEID SEGREGATION WAS ANTI-WHITE.

------------------------------------------------------------

What does Pipes & Co. want?:

* "condemning and curbing the leftist activism that too often passes for Middle East scholarship."

CENSORSHIP!!

------------------------------------------------------------

WHAT IS GOING ON IN PALESTINE/ISRAEL HAS BEEN A 60-YEAR ORDEAL BY AN INDIGENOUS PEOPLE, THE PALESTINIANS, ENGAGED IN AN ANTI-SETTLER-COLONIAL STRUGGLE AGAINST OPPRESSION AND AMERICAN AND, PREVIOUSLY, EUROPEAN IMPERIALISM.

ZIONISM IS A JEWISH-SUPREMACIST--BY DEFINITION--RACIST IDEOLOGY THAT CLAIMS THAT JEWS QUA JEWS--WORLDWIDE--WHEREVER AND WHENEVER THEY WERE ACTUALLY BORN--HAVE AN *INHERENT*, *SUPERIOR*, *AUTOMATIC*, AND *NATURAL-BORN* (as opposed to the Palestinians) RIGHT TO MOST/ALL OF THE LAND IN PALESTINE.

ZIONISM *IS* RACIST; ZIONISM *IS* JEWISH-SUPREMACY; ZIONISM *IS* FASCIST FOR PALESTINIANS; ZIONIST *IS* SOCIAL INEQUALITY; ZIONISM *IS* NAZIESQUE (THE ISRAELI MILITARY *ADMITTED* THAT THEY WERE STUDYING NAZI METHODS FOR USE IN THE OCCUPIED TERRITORIES!!); NELSON *MANDELA* AND DESMOND *TUTU* HAVE COMPARED ZIONISM TO SOUTH AFRICAN APARTHEID!

JUST LIKE AMERICAN SLAVERY, NAZISM, "JIM CROW", AND SOUTH AFRICAN APARTHEID WERE ABOLISHED, ZIONISM AS A RACIST POLITICAL IDEOLOGY MUST BE ABOLISHED TOO. AND SO TOO SHOULD THE *HUGE* FINANCIAL, POLITICAL, AND INSTITUTIONAL AMERICAN SUPPORT FOR ISRAELI ZIONISM BE ABOLISHED.

JUST AS SOUTH AFRICA AS AN APARTHEID STATE WAS ABOLISHED, SO SHOULD ISRAEL AS A ZIONIST STATE BE ABOLISHED.
