Triple-Header Against Verizon Greed
July 23, 2003 - 9 Days to Expiration!

- Verizon Strikes Out on Quality Service

In a triple-header, union members are leafleting and demonstrating
at Verizon-sponsored baseball games in New York, Philadelphia,
and Boston.

Flyers for Phillies Fans

On July 21, 200 CWA Local 13,000 members passed out 10,000
red fliers to baseball fans as they entered Veterans Stadium
to attend the evening Phillies game.

Located at each stadium entrance and the subway exit,
red- and black-shirted CWA members used VZ Night to highlight
the importance of Hometown Jobs & Quality Service.

Once the game started, 145 of the same members attended
the game and sat in a block of seats across from VZ's
box, armed with "sloganed" signs and banners for all to
see.

Even the weather cooperated. Despite the forecast for
rain, it was sunny! Check out the photos here:

No Free Speech at Shea

NYC Verizon activists, mostly from Locals 1106, 1109 and
1103, leafletted Verizon Visor Night at Shea Stadium in
Queens to let Mets fans know that Verizon is "striking
out on service quality." About 60 CWAers distributed 5,000
leaflets to the crowd.

We then went inside the ballpark and, in the 4th inning,
set up a human billboard that spelled out the message
"Verizon Strikes Out on Service," but Shea Stadium security
guards quickly descended on our group and rather unceremoniously
ejected us from the stadium. It appeared that Verizon
was just a little bit touchy about having their giveaway
night disrupted by CWAers telling the truth about what's
going on with jobs and quality service.

"Yankees Suck . . . and So Does Verizon"

Having learned that major league baseball stadiums are
apparently "diss-free zones"--where corporate sponsors
are concerned--Verizon workers in New England are planning
to let Yankee-hating Red Sox fans carry our message inside
the park at this Sunday's sold-out Boston vs. New York
game at Fenway.

Look for those fans to be wearing thousands of stickers--on
their free Verizon visors and other parts of their bodies--which
will enable them to simultaneously express their opinion
about the visiting team and the game's sponsor. Fenway
security better be ready to eject hundreds of people this
time--and, if they do, many of them will be demanding
their money back. This could be the biggest baseball fan
free speech fight in Fenway history!!

[Editor's note: We hasten to add that of course our New
England brothers and sisters mean no disrespect to Yankees
fans, and are merely taking advantage of this historic
rivalry. And probably still trying to make themselves
feel better about trading away Babe Ruth.]

Salisbury Service Reps Shut Down Scab Recruitment!

On Saturday Local 2106 set up informational picketing
in order to discourage members of the community to apply
for their jobs in the residential business office in Salisbury,
Md.

The company had advertised 105 service rep positions for
the Salisbury business office -- the exact number of unionized
reps that work there.

Local 2106 succeeded in shutting down the interview process!
Verizon canceled the Saturday interviews. The community
members who tried to attend the interviews were supportive
of the members and their issues.
