Stop Sweatshops! This years pre-Christmas shopping will be sourly interrupted on Boston's posh Newbury Street. Students, workers, and environmental activists will demand an end to abusive and inhumane conditions in Nike and Gap sweatshops.
Saturday December 16th at 1PM
The Newbury Street Gap
201 Newbury Street, Copley Sq. T Stop (Green Line)
Instill a sense of reality into this year¡¯s holiday shopping madness:
In Saipan, a US territory replete with sweatshops, Gap labels their clothes 'Made in the USA,' even though they do not adhere to US labor laws. Workers are forbidden to organize unions, work 12 hour days, seven days a week, and earning $3.05 an hour or less, often without overtime pay¡¦.
Nike workers in Indonesia are paid $1.25 a day. A worker cannot support himself, let alone his family off less than $4 a day. Is $4 a day too much to ask of a company whose CEO Phil Knight makes over $1,000 an hour?
We know that workers need these jobs. However, they don¡¯t meet basic human standards! We demand:
¨ª full public disclosure of factory addresses
¨ª living wages
¨ª independent monitoring
¨ª freedom of association and collective bargaining
¨ª safe working conditions
¨ª no forced labor
¨ª no child labor
¨ª women's rights
