Call To Network: DNC Boston 2004 Counter-Summit (english)
26 Jul 2003
The DNC is in exactly one year--let's start organizing for a kick-ass shadow convention.

DNC "Shadow" Convention/Counter-Summit
Boston, MA -- July 25-31, 2004

The Democratic Party has it easy in the 2004 elections. Whichever
candidate is expels from its bowels will receive millions of
unearned and undeserved votes from radical democrats, libertarians,
populists, labor and community activists, anarchists, grassroots
environmentalists, principled (and lazy) non-voters, humanists,
pacifists, skeptics, and even revolutionaries. Thanks in part to our
votes and our organizing efforts, the Dems will win in 2004. But
they won't get it for free. In exchange, the Party will be--must
be--made accountable for the nationalist, fear-mongering,
money-grubbing, anti-democratic corporate appendage it has become.

They will know this because we will go to Boston with them next
July. While they rally behind the lesser of two evils, we will take the
streets; our voices will pierce through the carefully choreographed
spectacle of their Convention. And we will hold our own "shadow"
convention, a democratic forum in which real issues are discussed, real
alliances are forged, and real solutions are demanded.

This is an anonymous, preliminary call, one year to the day before the
DNC begins. If you are in Boston now, or plan to be next year, and want
to help organize a shadow convention, counter-summit, social forum,
etc., contact DNCshadow04 (at) A website and public listserv
are first on the "wish list"--then we can hear the visions and ideas various
individuals and collectives have about the shape this project might take,
and then secure venues and begin to contact speakers, facilitators, artists,
etc. (Our own suggestion is that the forum have a very minimal basis of
unity; remain officially unaffiliated from street protests; and reflect the anti-
authoritarian organizational forms our movements have developed.)
