It's Day 3 of Mass Earth First!'s Tree-sit in the proposed expansion zone for the ski area on Mt. Wachusett. The woods being threatened by destruction is a critical buffer zone for the adjacent old-growth forsest (see feature). On Tuesday police became aware of the two tree-sitters and the presence of their supporters. They removed a ground blockade but have yet to move on the sitters. Supporters are being prevented from maintaining contact with the sitters and there is growing concern that a lack of witnesses will allow police to act without restraint and possibly endanger the lives of those in the trees.

A call has gone out to New England peace activists to go to Mt. Wachusett and bear witness to this non-violent action and any inappropriate actions by police. As of this writing no one has come forward. This is a problem because an interchange between a hiker and Princeton town police yesterday was found to be highly troubling. The plainclothes cops (see photo) were extremely hostile, attempting to provoke a fight with the hiker (ostensibly so they could arrest him). They used foul language and were inappropriatly aggressive. If the behavior of these officers is any indication of future actions, witnesses are essential.

What You Can Do:

* Go to the slopes above the ski area on Mt. Wachusett and bear witness (email: takeaction2001 (at) hotmail.com for details)

* Call the Princeton Police Department and the State Police and inform them that any inappropriate behavior on the part of law enforcement will not be tolerated and will be reported to the appropriate officials
Princeton Police (978)464-2928
Princeton Selectmen (978) 464-2102
State Police Troop C (508)-829-8326
Mass. Attorney General (617) 727-2200 (508) 792-7600

* Contact your Massachusett state rep & senator and ask them to monitor the situation.
* Contact the media in your area.

I took a road trip tp Mt. Wachusett on tuesday and spent a couple of hours looking around and couldn't find anything.

The locals didn't seem to know anything either.

Post better directions and I'll come back.
