Austin rallies against GOP power grab! (english)
09 Aug 2003
Modified: 10 Aug 2003
While thousands of brave protesters sweated in the August heat to condemn the GOP redistricting -- ordered by Tom DeLay -- Austin INDYMEDIA is strangely SILENT. You'd almost swear that the Austin IMC is run by closet-REPUBLICANS!?!?

Redistricting brings protesters to State Capitol
James Keith

More than 2,000 protestors from across Texas converged on the State Capitol Saturday.

It was an organized protest of support for the Texas Democratic senators in New Mexico.

The frustrated Texans hoped to get Republican lawmakers' attention on redistricting and the special sessions.

Among the speakers were family members of the AWOL senators, including Sen. Leticia Van de Putte's daughter.

"We know she is in New Mexico right now because she along with the rest of Texas 11 refuse to succumb to Rick Perry and Tom DeLay philosophy of our way or our way," she said to the crowd.

Demonstrators expressed their anger over a push by some Republicans to realign congressional district lines in Texas.

"If the Governor and Lieutenant Governor were sincere about addressing our critical issues, then health care, education and improving the economy would be the only thing on the special session agenda," another speaker said.

Not everyone at the rally supported the Democratic senators. A number of people showed up at the rally, demanding the senators come back to Texas.

"This business of running away is not what Texans do. I can't believe Texans want their politicians running away to another state," a protester said.

Democratic supporters said they felt the escape to New Mexico was simply the right thing to do.

"Leadership means responsibility and setting aside personal agendas. Leadership means loyalty and common sense and leadership means service and commitment to those you represent," a supporter said.

Similar rallies will take place across the state. Democratic supporters say they'll continue until Republicans give up on redistricting.

possible reasons Austin IMC not covering this (english)
10 Aug 2003
Can I suggest a couple reasons the Austin IMC may not be covering this?

1) They don't consider this issue relevant to a radical news center. I'm not sure I would agree, but it's a legitimate line of reasoning.

2) They may just not have enough volunteers with the free time, energy and interest to cover the issue. We often miss important things at the Boston IMC for that reason. If that is the case--well, you are obviously capable of posting to a newswire, so you do them a favor and cover it for them.

If you have done an article on the rallies for the Austin IMC newswire and it hasn't been featured, you could always e-mail their editorial collective and ask why.
