israeli racism does not discriminate!
14 Dec 2000
failure of press to uncover discrimination within israel as major cause of current aparthide state in palestine
this is a reaction to imc posts as well as to the mainsteam press coverage of the al-aqsa intifada.
of the few reporters able to perceive the current situation as an aparthide almost none are willing to admit (or perhaps have not done enough research) that israelis do not disciminate with their racism. the picture often painted of a united israel against the arabs is simply not true. israeli politics has been under the control of the ashkenazi elite since independence in 48. their discriminatory racist politics have played such a huge role in politics that academics and laymen alike refer to them as 'the establishment' . during israel's early years the establishment gave away minority rights by forcing them under the control of religious organizations as a concession to the right for both parties' inability to draft a constitution defining israel's religious affiliations clearly. for the most part this trend has continued despite occational protests beginning as early as the '50's! the result can be seen in comparatively underdeveloped cities inhabited by minorities which for strategic purposes were placed near borders. or in settlements which often (30-40%) are inhabited for economic purposes not ideological ones. the end result of internal discrimination in israel has been the building of an undereducated religious conservative majority... which ironically consists mostly of those who prior to israel's conception were residing in arab territories. these folks immigrated as a result of the political pressure israel's creation caused them in their native ARAB lands, only to be discriminated against by european jews. they have since spent their time trying to rid themselves of their arab culture which separates them from their ashkenazi counterparts. an easy way to do that is by being anti arab, which is the natural course anyhow for an undereducated religious conservative who seeks to demonstrate outmost patriotism.
so when reporters call for israel to respect international human rights laws and claim israel is united under zionism against the arabs i say 'how can you expect israelis to demand right for others which they do not extend to their own brothers and sisters?'
in closing i encourage us as progressive americans (or whatever) to recognize, especially on this day, how these politics are mirrored at home by our own establishment and minority groups.
