Wachusett Update 9/2/03
Dandi has been up in a giant red oak tree that has come to be known as Edna for one month! Howl for Dandi and Edna!
The tree sits are still up. There is however a need for other sitters to replace the smaller short term sit. If you have climbing knowledge or are willing to learn contact us ASAP (see below).
About 5 days ago, Tim McGuire, a WMA official, walked into the forest with a person that appeared to be from a logging company. They came through two times, stopping to talk to Dandi on the second walk through. Also, for the second time a helicopter has hovered very, very close to the top of Dandi’s tree. It is important that this type of dangerous harassment (presumably by a state agency) be witnessed and reported. WITNESSES & SUPPORT ARE NEEDED! There has been no real attempt at removing the sitters, but such threatening activity by choppers sets a risky precedent.
The Wachusett Ski area will be holding their annual blues festival on Sept 6th. It might be a good place to spread the word about the proposed cutting and the tree sits. Something like: "WMA's ski expansion gives me the blues!" If you can go to this event and hand out info, let us know and we can get some flyers to you.
There has been no word from the courts. We expect it anytime. There are worries though that the state will extend the cut date for the ski area past the original 15th deadline. If that happens we will need to re-asses the situation, and brainstorm. Perhaps another meeting.
