Mt. Wachusett Tree-sit - URGENT! (english)
07 Sep 2003
The sitters might be under attack this week and we need to have a supportive presence there when the police do try and take them out of the trees. We also need legal observers to witness the treatment of the activists in case the police or ski area officials get heavy handed.
Urgent Wachusett Alert Sept, 7th 2003

Today we heard it through the grapevine, from a credible source, that the ski area has received final approval to clear cut the forest that the tree sitters still occupy from the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR, formally the DEM). The information fits with what the sitters have seen in the past few days. On Friday (the day that they supposedly got the ok from the state) three loggers came into the forest to plan. The sitters heard them clearly saying, “this is where we will start the cut”, and “this is where we will bring the rig in”. Shortly thereafter, Tim McGuire, Environmental Engineer for the ski area came up and said to the sitters “see you next week”.

This is a call for people willing to further involve themselves in this campaign. The sitters might be under attack this week and we need to have a supportive presence there when the police do try and take them out of the trees. We also need legal observers to witness the treatment of the activists in case the police or ski area officials get heavy handed. If you can video anything that happens, please contact us at 617-817-7099 or write to takeaction2001 (at) hotmail.com

People willing to commit to on the ground forest defense should form affinity groups and contact us so we can coordinate groups. Remember, contacting us does not mean divulging every detail of your action. This is just a way to coordinate days and times of events to maximize effectiveness.

If we have not made it perfectly clear, this is an urgent plea for help. These are your forests. The precedent that will be set by the ski area will have widespread implications for forests and parks around the entire state. Make no mistake about it, this is a state wide issue. Please help.
