Mass Earth First! Protests Start of Forest Destruction on Mt. Wachusett (english)
14 Sep 2003
Mass Earth First! has called for another mass demonstration against the clear-cutting of the forest next Saturday, September 20th at noon.

Princeton,MA - Scores of protesters descended on Mt. Wachusett in north-central Massachusetts all day yesterday to demonstrate against the beginning of the destruction of an old-growth buffer zone that protects the state's largest stand of rare old-growth forest east of the Connecticut River. Mt. Wachusett is public land, but the ski operation, Wachusett Mountain Associates (WMA) run by the wealthy and well-connected Crowley family, leases the ever-expanding ski area on the northwest face of the mountain. A tree-sit has been in place since August 1st in a wooded area where WMA wants to once again expand their foothold. The two tree-sitters are determined to stop the planned destruction of the buffer zone by placing themselves in harms way. Yesterday that harm nearly occurred when what appeared to be inexperienced WMA employees attempted to cut down a tree near one of the sitters and nearly dropped it on the tree-sitter’s platform. A video of that incident will soon be made public.
Once again, state and local police have closed off the area to the tree-sitters’ support team and concern is growing that without witnesses WMA or over-zealous authorities could endanger the tree-sitters. However, some people are allowed access nearby the area. Yesterday, people from Turtle Path Mindfulness Practice Center showed up for their monthly "Mt Wachusett Old Growth Forest Walking Meditation". The group was generally supportive of the group’s effort to save the old-growth buffer zone.
