British Prime Minister Suffers Tomato Attack
09 Jan 2001
Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001
BRISTOL, England (Reuters) -
British Prime Minister Tony Blair was hit by an overripe tomato Tuesday as protestors against western sanctions on Iraq pelted him with rotten fruit and vegetables at a pre-election rally.Blair, in the west England city of Bristol to make a keynote policy speech, was hit square on the back of his dark blue suit as he arrived at a ceremony to open a new college.Despite the disruption, Blair continued waving and smiling at the gathered throng as a red stain dribbled down his back.

The young woman who threw the tomato was detained by police.
An election is expected to be called in May. Both Blair and Conservative leader William Hague limbered up in Tuesday for the possible early election battlewith precampaign launches of their parties' policies.
