Somerville Green-Rainbow Peace From Every Balcony (english)
30 Sep 2003
Modified: 12:00:07 PM
The Somerville Green-Rainbow Peace From Every Balcony campaign is a grassroots peace flag movement which champions democratic participation in our nation's policies and condemns the Bush Administration's reckless disregard for international law and the will of the American people.
The Somerville Green-Rainbow Party proudly announces the Peace From Every
Balcony campaign -- a grassroots peace flag movement to demonstrate our
commitment to building a peaceful world for our children and loved ones to
live in. The old saying, "think globally, act locally" has never been more
appropriate than it is today.

To highlight the recent unification of the Rainbow Coalition Party with
the Massachusetts Green Party, under the common banner of the
Green-Rainbow Party, we are selling beautiful bright rainbow peace flags.
In solidarity with the peace flag movement which started in Italy and
spread throughout Europe during the build-up to the Iraq War, we are
offering flags which were made in Italy. We hope to spark a movement which
champions democratic participation in our nation's policies, condemns the
Bush Administration and its reckless disregard for international law and
the will of the American people, and offers non-violent solutions to
global conflicts.

The Green-Rainbow Party of Massachusetts, and the Green Party of the
United States, are here as alternatives to the two politics-as-usual
corporate parties who saw fit to ignore the 10+ million
people who marched worldwide to protest an unjust, unjustifiable war. We
cannot forget Senator Kerry's vote to give Bush war powers, despite his
own serious misgivings and enormous opposition to the war among his

We urge the people of Somerville to hang these flags from their
windows and balconies in a bold statement of conscience. We also urge the
people of Somerville to consider the connections between our militarized
economy, and the painful budget decisions that are crippling state and
local services. Furthermore, we hope this campaign continues to spill
beyond Somerville's borders and spreads across the United States like
it did across Europe.

While the Democrats and Republicans are playing games to prove who is
tougher on Homeland Security, the Somerville Green-Rainbow Party
recognizes that true security can only be obtained once the people of this
city have secured their rights to healthcare, housing, education, and a
healthy environment.

The Green-Rainbow Party is a values-based political party, and we are
accountable to our stated values, which are available on the Green-Rainbow
Party website:

Nonviolence is one of our Ten Key Values, and it is defined as follows:
"It is essential that we develop effective alternatives to our current
patterns of violence at all levels, from the family and the streets, to
nations and the world. We will work to demilitarize our society and
eliminate weapons of mass destruction, without being naive about the
intentions of other governments. We recognize the need for self-defense
and the defense of others who are in helpless situations. We promote
nonviolent methods to oppose practices and policies with which we
disagree, and will guide our actions toward lasting personal, community
and global peace".

Harvard Square Saturdays (english)
30 Sep 2003
As a registered Green, I'm glad that the Green-Rainbow folks have discovered Indymedia.

However, if the entire Green-Rainbow organization can't find one or two people to go to Harvard Square on Saturdays and teach people about Green-Rainbow positions, then their party is not worth remaining a member of, and I will withdraw from it in order to support Kucinich in the dem primary.

Presence, people. We need a diverse presence committed to civil discussion and debate in public. Progressive groups must seize the opportunity and create a tradition of public participation or we will all wither on the branch!

Harvard Square saturdays are not a joke. They might be the subjects of numerous and sometimes annoying posts, but this is because there are people who have a sense of what's going on and want to nip it in the bud. The only way to find out what's going on there is to go in person.

To the growing number of regulars, I think it's fair to say you ain't seen nothing yet!
Suggestion for this Saturday. (english)
30 Sep 2003
I suggest we set up stakes and place the "heads" (masks of course) of the current administration on the stakes (a la, the French Revolution). Last Saturday a flag pole featured one such "mask." I'm going to try to find an Ashcroft mask. I realize that we already have Bush and Cheney masks. I will bring some "poles" to serve as stakes.

I'm also looking for a stuffed elephant doll and a spit. It would make a create display for "Republicans: The other white meat." (i.e. "eat the rich")

Nick had a great idea last time and I think we should follow through with it. Republicans need to know what it has been like for dissidents over the last two years. It's time to turn the tables on the neo-con fascists and use street theatre to "oppress" them.
