Outraged Citizens Protest FOX TV War Lies
Demonstration at FOX 25 TV Studio (Rte 1 Dedham)
Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003 from 4-6pm

The distortions and lies which the media have promulgated in the lead-up to the Iraq war have outraged some residents on the South Shore. Citizens for an Informed Community, a Bridgewater area community group, is especially upset by what it sees as the fuzzy logic of the Iraq War talk and the manipulation of the truth, which has underlain much of the Iraq War reporting. According to spokeswoman Faye George, "the accumulation of a large body of lies and distortions has created a national climate whereby the majority of Americans have come to believe the Bush administration’s deceptions." These false ideas originating from the Bush administration and disseminated as fact by the media have had disastrous effects:

* At the beginning of the war a majority of Americans erroneously believed that there was a direct link between Saddam Hussein and September 11th .

* 41% of Americans believed that weapons of mass destruction had been found in Iraq, then our national discussion is based on falsehoods and deceptions.

Such widespread misconceptions weaken our ability to wage a foreign policy based on fact. The deaths of thousands of Iraqis and hundreds of Americans have resulted from a string of false assumptions. A decision to attack another country, which leads to death and costs billions, should never be taken lightly. We believe the public should be properly informed.

We decided to focus our "demonstration against the lies” on the FOX Television station, because of all the media outlets they have been the worst in presenting the distortions and lies that formed the basis for our national deception. For example, FOX reporters and commentators presented the following:

* Before the war, Fox reporters constantly stated that a 100-acre chemical weapons plant had been discovered in Iraq – false, with no apology.

* On April 10th, a “Breaking News” story on Fox reported that weapons-grade plutonium had been found in Al Tuwaitha – again a lie that was then conveniently stacked with the other lies.

There are many more specific instances where FOX reports were just plain lies. We call on FOX to stop the lying and to heed a recent study conducted by PIPA (2003), which found out that the more you watched FOX news, the less you knew about the truth underlying the Iraq war. The study also showed that FOX viewers were more willing to believe the lies and distortions promulgated by the Bush administration. The lies have had the effect of poisoning our national discussion during a time of great international tension. It is irresponsible journalism when FOX lies so balatantly. Our democracy demands that the truth be spoken.

Don't waste your time on Faux News. Come on down to Harvard Square and let a real man bring you oral pleasures never before imagined. Just look for the display where I am hawking my anti-Bush stickers. Wait until you see the size of my tongue.

I can please and satisfy you.
