Stop The FTAA Roadshow To Visit Harvard

Former sweatshop worker and global finance
experts

educate Americans on the real impacts of
corporate greed.

SAN
FRANCISCO - Rainforest Action Network (www.ran.org),
Global Exchange (www.globalexchange.org)
and Student Environmental Action Coalition (www.seac.org)
will join with local groups on an East Coast U.S. tour to tell the truth about
the proposed Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA). The Stop The FTAA
Roadshow will present the untold
facts about the FTAA’s impact on human rights, democracy and sustainable
development and provide campaign training in solidarity with the upcoming Miami
Mobilization against the FTAA in late November.  Former sweatshop worker and union organizer Carmencita
“Chie” Abad will speak
from personal experience about the human rights abuses endured as a result of
corporate greed.

            WHO:            Carmencita
“Chie” Abad

            WHAT:           Stop
The FTAA Roadshow

            WHEN:           Monday,
October 27, 2003 at 6:00 p.m.

            WHERE:         Harvard
University, Land Auditorium, Kennedy School of Government

If
passed, the FTAA will become the largest “free trade” zone in the
world imposing poverty and environmental ruin on over 800 million human
beings.  It will give multinational
corporations sweeping new powers over democracy and virtually uncontrolled
access to the Earth’s natural resources while severely limiting the
ability of local governments to guarantee human rights and environmental
protections.

The FTAA is the tip of the spear of an elitist economic
agenda that will exploit both the poor and planet,” said Dan Firger,
Global Finance Campaign Organizer for Rainforest Action Network.

Carmencita
“Chie” Abad endured six years as a sweatshop laborer on the Pacific
island of Saipan, a U.S. territory.
She survived unconscionable working conditions in order to meet quotas
for her employer, the Sako Corporation, a clothing manufacturer for American
retailers.  When Chie tried to
organize a union for garment workers, she was met with fierce resistance and
eventually lost her job.  Chie now
lives in the U.S., where she works to educate Americans about the inhumane
factory conditions around the world and within the U.S.

The
Cambridge stop on the Stop The FTAA Roadshow is co-sponsored by The Human
Rights PIC, ALANA and the Progressive Caucus.
