“We can’t afford to lose any more hospitals!”
SEIU Local 2020 President Celia Wcislo called for immediate action by the state legislature to pass a hospital stabilization bill that could save many struggling hospitals.
“Our elected officials must act now,” said Wcislo. “We need a ‘Hospital Stabilization’ law that would set up an early warning system to identify financially distressed hospitals and provide emergency short-term revenue to keep failing hospitals open and continuing to provide high-quality care.”
“The failure to save Waltham Hospital should be all the evidence that lawmakers and the public need to immediately pass this long-over-due legislation that could prevent future hospital closures.”
When CareGroup announced that it was going to close Waltham Hospital last year, SEIU members – backed up by their union – worked overtime with legislators, regulators, allied health care organizations and many community leaders to find a way to keep it open.
Yet despite a valiant community effort to save the hospital, Waltham Hospital eventually closed. It closed in spite of the fact that the Department of Public Health concluded that all of Waltham Hospital’s services were “essential” to the health care needs of Waltham and its surrounding communities.
“The decision to close Waltham hospital was proof that abandoning health care to the so-called “free market” failed Waltham and is failing Massachusetts,” added Wcislo, who submitted written testimony in support of House bills 522 and 1088 to the legislature’s Joint Committee on Health Care. “There simply was no justification for the loss of these essential services to people in Waltham. It proves the urgent need for the state to have more resources to assist failing hospitals.”
