Lucy Parsons Center Visited by the Secret Service

On Friday, November 7, an agent from the Secret Service paid a visit to the Lucy Parsons Center, a long-time radical bookstore and infoshop in Boston. Earlier in the week the bookstore received a suspicious piece of mail allegedly sent from the bookstore and containing questionable material. The Secret Service acting on “intelligence reports” was investigating this mail which had been reported to the National Lawyers Guild, but not to the Secret Service.

Whether this was an isolated incident, or the beginning of a larger
campaign of harassment and intimidation (leading up to next summer¹s
Democratic National Convention, which will be held in Boston) is not known to us at this point.

The Lucy Parsons Center had nothing to do with producing or disseminating these images. We assume it is the work of provocateurs looking to both disrupt the daily operations of our bookstore, and also intimidate members of Boston’s radical community by instigating a campaign of federal harassment, surveillance, and intelligence gathering. Although these claims may seem an over-reaction, the workings of the Governments security apparatus--as revealed through the exposure of the FBI’s COINTELPRO operations--place them within a demonstrated realm of behavior.

We are currently in contact with the National Lawyers Guild, and preparing for the worst. We will continue to send out statements as new developments arise.

In solidarity,

Ignoring the troll who posted above (and I'd advise others to do the same), this is really disturbing news. The LPC is a long-standign Boston institution that has provided important educational resources for what...30 years now? Any attempt to use dirty tricks to provide a pretext for gpolice harassment should be a concern to everyone, regardless of their politics.

Keep everyone opsted, LPC! We're with you.

I don't buy that it was the secret service. I have no doubt they claimed to be the secret service, but isn't the secret service solely for the protection of the president and white house officials? It doesn't make sense, and I don't buy it. Plus, this isn't an isolated incident of the LPC being "harassed" in the past few months. Something's going down, and this is bullshit. Defend the Lucy Parsons Center!

Hahaha! That's funny. I always thought those dolts at the commie book store were ripe for a practical joke. How come they don't GIVE the books away? BTW look at www.cpusa.org. That commie website explains how you too can become a commie for only a small sum each month. If you fail to pay, the Commie Party kicks you out and you become just a reg'lar American again. hahaha! Those Guys!

Anyone who thinks that the purpose of the Secret Service is the protection of the president and other designated "protectees," and the investigation of counterfeiting, is extremely naive and uninformed. My own investigation by the Secret Service in the spring of 1994 was supposedly for a letter I'd written to the editor of a newspaper, the letter supposedly threatening the lives of Clinton and Salinas (it did no such thing), but really in support of the Zapatista rebellion. How much the investigation had to do with the letter can be seen by the fact that the Secret Service never even tried to find it, stated at the outset that I wouldn't be arrested, but persisted in "investigating" me anyway, interrogating me about my political beliefs and getting a grand jury to issue illegal subpoenas for fingerprints, a handwriting sample and a photograph. Illegal, as the "case" was about a letter I never denied writing, signed, and even intended to be published in the newspaper!

My experience and that of many others has been that the Secret Service is a secret police agency the chief purpose of which is to repress political dissent. It does not surprise me that LPC was visited by the Secret Service. I would urge LPC to resist the Secret Service and not to provide it with any information or cooperation.
