Misogyny and Misothery Collide at Petco (english)
12 Nov 2003
A response to a mainstream news article appearing in the San Diego Union Tribune in early September. Anti-woman comments from Petco, Inc.'s Director of Public Relations sparks a fury with women around the country.
Misogyny and Misothery Collide at Petco
Sept 5, 03
To whom it may concern:

We have recently come across what we find to be an offensive, callous remark by a Mr. Don Cowan, Director, Public Relations for the large pet store chain Petco. We are not only offended because we are animal rights activists, but also as women.

Mr. Cowan recently stated the following in an article when asked for the numbers of dead and dying animals in Petco stores:

Cowan said the number of deaths and injuries at Petco stores is small, but that the company doesn't release those figures because they would only lead to negative publicity.

"It's almost like saying, when did you stop beating your wife," Cowan said. "No matter what the answer is, it will not be good enough for those people. One is too many."

The history of our species is infested with misogyny, as you all well know. The crisis we, as animal rescuers, deal with every day is misothery, which is very similar to misogyny though it means the hatred of animals. Petco is a perfect example of a misotheric corporation. It seems that here misogyny and misothery have, unfortunately, collided.

Countless women worldwide have suffered at the hands of loved ones, and ignorant statements such as these perpetuate the misogyny. It has been noted that domestic abuse often begins with animal abuse in several studies by various universities.

Letters to the editor, journalist, and Don Cowan personally are encouraged. We must end this cycle of abuse before it progresses any further.
