Repubican National Convention (english)
15 Nov 2003
Video surveillance will play a key role in this lock-down. Not only will it be used by the Secret Service to "secure" the various places and routes that the President-Select and Vice-President-Select will use while they are here in NYC, but it will also be used by the NYPD and FBI to identify and track the movements and associations of people who (intend to) protest. No doubt some of these cameras are already in place; all of them will certainly be operating by June 2004.

Republican National Convention:
Not Welcome in New York

On 30 August 2004, the Republican National Convention (RNC) will be held in New York City, our hometown and current base of operations. A four-day-long bore-athon, the RNC will likely culminate in the renomination of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, who are, of course, currently pretending to be the President and Vice President of the United States, respectively. This spectacular event will bring to New York -- a financially bankrupt city in a financially bankrupt state, both of which are, by the way, controlled by the Republican Party -- tens of thousands of politicians, delegates and reporters, all of whom will need plenty of hooch, hotels and hookers. Money for the local economy. Hooray!

The convention will also bring hundreds of thousands of protesters, whose issues will of course include Bush's "original sin," i.e., his theft of the 2000 Presidential Election; the unproductive prosecution of the swindlers behind various multi-billion dollar corporate scams (Enron, WorldCom, Arthur Anderson et al.); Bush's attempts to block independent inquiry into the September 11th attacks; the contents, and circumstances of the drafting and passage, of the so-called PATRIOT Act; the illegal wars against and on-going occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq; the role of Halliburton and other Cheney/Bush oil companies in the "reconstruction" of those very countries; financial and military support for Israel's occupation of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip; and the illegal detention and torture of suspects and prisoners of war at Guantanamo Bay. The cynicism and cold political calculation in the choices as to location and timing of the RNC -- in New York, so close to the 3rd anniversary of the September 11th attacks -- will also draw protests.

The "security" needs of the RNC will be immense, and will be addressed by many different groups, including the NYPD, the Fire Department, the FBI/NYPD Joint Terrorism Task Force, the National Guard, the Secret Service, the Coast Guard, and parts of the US military's special forces. Both before and during the RNC, these groups -- working independently and in concert -- will attempt to 1) "defend" the politicians and delegates (and the places at which they are sleeping and eating) against any "attacks" that might come from protesters or terrorists (the two terms being virtually synonymous to hacks, both in the Bush Administration and in the corporate media), and 2) launch "preemptive attacks" against any protesters or terrorists who might be planning to attack and otherwise disrupt the RNC. In short, the security forces will try to shut down everything in Manhattan but the RNC itself, thereby protecting the RNC from being shut down . . . by anyone.

We, the members of the New York Surveillance Camera Players (SCP-New York), are anarchists, which means that -- though we are adamantly opposed to the existence, policies and actions of the Bush Administration -- we won't support the candidacy of any of Bush's Democratic, Green or "independent" opponents, no matter who they might be. But this doesn't mean that the SCP-New York will be inactive during the RNC. Far from it: we will be as active as possible. But our focus will be on the entirety of "representative democracy," not just on the desirability of one particular candidate over another.

In the months leading up to the RNC, we will (among other things):

-- update and distribute our map of surveillance cameras in the convention area; and

-- inform protesters, RNC delegates, and the media about the level of surveillance they will face when they come to New York City.

During the RNC, we will (among other things):

-- perform in front of publically installed surveillance cameras; we will announce exactly when and where; and

-- offer a walking tour of the convention area (or as close to it as we can get) every single day that the RNC is in session; we will announce exactly when and where;

Note that, during the RNC, we will also continue to update the page that keeps track of the various government, military and police agencies that visit this web site. It has already spawned at least one (possibly) RNC-related sub-page, and may well spawn others over the course of the next 9 months.

14 November 2003.
