During my recent trip to Chile (5/21 - 6/10) I had the opportunity to meet in Santiago with a group that works in support of the native Mapuche resistence. The military conquest of the majority of the Mapuche territory was not accomplished by the Spanish but by the Chilean army in 1881, 71 years after Chile gained its independence from Spain. The Chilean politicians of the time called it the "pacification" of the Auracania. The Spanish called the Mapuche "araucanos".

The Mapuche resistence however continues up to this day. In synch with native peoples resistence in the continent so clearly manifested in Chiapas Mexico, Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador, the Mapuche are also raising the level of their organization to confront an oppresive state that doesn't hesitate to forcefully expell them from their land. When they resist eviction, they are put in prison using laws such as the Antiterrorist Law, destruction of property, resisting arrest, etc.

During the meeting with the supporter group they informed us of the latest efforts of Mapuche organizing. This time they will carry out a Mapuche Traditional Authority Tribunal to expose the crimes of the Chilean State and capitalist corporations against the Mapuche people. They estimated their total expenses would be around 1 million chilean pesos. I quickly calculated and that was about $2,000 dollars. I couldn't resist the temptation of attempting to contribute to the effort with at least 50% of that, that is $1,000 dollars.

Chief Juana Calfunao Paillalef (yes! a female chief) sent me a proposal requesting funding support.

We are planning a public activity Saturday, July 8, to report on this situation by showing a documentary called "El Despojo" (The Stealing) that shows a partial picture of the repression and stealing against Mapuche people. I will also report back briefly on the general state of politics in Chile including the perspectives of the Bachelet government and the recent historic high-school student movement.
