"Easing the minds of military children"

By Jeff Yosick

It's hard to imagine what it must be like for soldiers leaving their loved ones behind. Yet when military personnel are called to serve out of country it becomes a situation that cant be avoided. Add to the mix a hostile situation such as what is happening in Iraq these days, it becomes almost unbearable.

Nearly two years ago my brother was called to Iraq. He was to serve for one year in the war torn country along with the other 2,500 men enlisted in his battalion. The news for me and my family was immediate fear. Fear for his safety, fear for his wife he was leaving behind, and fear that serious harm might come his way.

Although my brother didn't have any children at the time, many of his fellow soldiers were forced to give their children one last hug before saying goodbye. They had to look their children in the eyes and wonder if it would be the last time that they would see the innocence and youth they'd grown to love.

Upon my brother's deployment, I set off on a journey. A journey that led to the writing of "Timmy and the Storm."
The emotions behind saying goodbye to my brother inspired me to take my sense of loss and pour it into a story. A story that would allow children to better understand the difficult reasons for seeing a parent or relative having to be away for so long.

There are no clear cut winners with war. Unfortunately, far too often, it's the children that are left behind that suffer the most.

I want to invite you to read my children's story titled "Timmy and the Storm." It's my hope that it will allow you to discuss and help your children better understand this truly painful event.

Author Jeff Yosick's book "Timmy and the Storm" will be released soon by Rain Publishing Inc. Ask for your copy at a local bookstore near you, or visit for more information.
