Emergency demonstration: Defend the Oaxaca commune!

US, Mexico: hands off Oaxaca! Ulises Ruiz, get out!
For a government of the APPO and the workers’ organizations!

All reports indicate that the capitalist rulers of Mexico are gathering their forces for an imminent and brutal attack against the Commune of Oaxaca. For over two months, a teachers’ union strike demanding the resignation of the murderous governor of Oaxaca state, Ulises Ruiz Ortiz, has gathered support from all the sectors of the workers and oppressed people of Oaxaca, and has grown into a situation of dual power, where the Popular Assembly of the People of Oaxaca (APPO) controls most of Oaxaca city and is gaining influence in the state of Oaxaca. The Oaxaca commune is now the highest point of the class struggle on the American continent. It has reached a crucial stage. The APPO, and the workers’ organizations across Mexico, will either expand the struggle into a nationwide general strike to bring down the government and stop its plans for a massacre in Oaxaca, preparing the way for the revolutionary siezure of power by the workers, or hesitate at this stage and be brutally driven back by the Mexican army.

US imperialism is in crisis in the Middle East. It must turn toward intensified exploitation at home and in Latin America, in order to rescue itself from its quagmire in Iraq and the unstable domestic economy. There can be no doubt that the bloody hands of the CIA are all over the plans of Mexican army troops massing around Oaxaca. The enemy of the oppressed and exploited people of Mexico is our enemy too: US imperialism. The power of the working class in the US can defeat the imperialist monster and be a decisive factor for the survival of the heroic Oaxaca commune.

We call on all the unions, leftist and anti-war groups to mobilize for this demonstration. We make a special appeal to Providence teachers: mobilize your fellow teachers and students in solidarity with the Oaxacan teachers, who are under the guns of US imperialism and the Mexican state!

Working Class Emancipation and the Workers International League (WIL) are organizing this demonstration in solidarity with Oaxaca. We have serious political differences with the WIL and the “International Marxist Tendency” (IMT) with which it sympathizes: primarily, that the IMT opposes political independence for the working class from its class enemy, the capitalists. In Mexico, the Militante group of the IMT supports the PRD, a capitalist party that murders striking workers, and these “Marxists” promote illusions among the workers that the PRD represents their interests. In Oaxaca, the PRD and its supporters have been promoting various reconciliation and mediation schemes for “cooling off” that are nothing but traps for the workers and the APPO, based on the false belief that a “profound reform of the institutions”, as opposed to a revolutionary overthrow of the government, can meet the demands of the workers who have rallied behind the APPO. This road leads to defeat, and more misery for the oppressed and exploited people. Despite these differences, we will strive for the most effective joint work with the WIL and the other leftist groups in Providence in a united front for the defense of the Oaxaca commune.
