Homes not Jails meeting
18 Dec 2003
The second Homes not Jails meeting will held this saturday, dec. 20, 5pm at 40 Gardner St. in Allston.
At the first meeting we discussed what Homes not Jails is, what's been done in DC and San Francisco, how to organize, how we're going to make decisions, different tenant and law groups that we should get in contact with, and the difference between public occupations and private squats.
The agenda so far:
assign people to get in contact with tenant and lawyer groups
what do we do next?
going out to look for habitable buildings

>>>Homes not Jails was first formed in 1992 as a homeless advocacy squatting organization. Homes not Jails does both "publicity" squatting (an open call to occupy a building to call media and public attention to housing concerns, which are evicted quickly) and permanent, sustainable squatting (creating a secure, long term living space with as little public attention as possible).

With the winter here, an increasing number of homeless people on the streets, fewer jobs, higher rents, and cuts in government spending on shelters and healthcare, something needs to be done. Hundreds out of the 6000+ homeless people in Boston sleep on the street during the winter, and every year there are reports of some freezing to death. At the same time, there are at least 300 privately owned abandoned properties in Boston alone, many of them habitable.
So what makes more sense:
homeless people occupying and fixing up abandoned buildings
or sleeping outside of them?

don't you think that it is a poor idea to publish activist's adresses on an open forum. I for one would hate to see my personal info on indymedia.

normally, yes, but they gave consent for it to be publicized.
