Sevent MegaMarch in Oaxaca Repressed by PFP
25 Nov 2006
Modified: 26 Nov 2006
They're reporting three dead. And there were several wounded today and tonight (at least one that seemed to be a gun shot wound), here in Oaxaca City.
Aleast one million people marched today into the center of Oaxaca City, where they attempted to form a 48-hour human circle around the Federal Preventative Police, who occupy the central Zocolo now after they violently dislocated the popular movements that had occupied the plaza since May 22. The PFP, we found out, wasn't about to deal with any kind of enclosure -- even if it was non-violent and temporary.

First came the tear gas. Then, there were rocks flying, from what seemed to be all sides. Who was throwing rocks from the third floor of that hotel? Was it a companero here, or one of them? The lines can be very blurry, as much of the repression (including today), came from civilian-dressed ..... paramilitaries, really.

Radio Universidad is reporting three dead in a shooting spree that just happened, in the last two hours (between 9 and 11 pm). We know of many folks (especially women, up near the Fortin Plaza), where movement people were pushed by the PFP tonight. It was only a few hours earlier that different social organizations, Marxist and anarchist groups, teachers, and others maintained their Planton in the plaza of Santo Domingo. It was only hours earlier that everyone there -- as well as thousands of passersby earlier -- watched videos of earlier protests, ate empanadas or beans and rice (often free, provided by donations), and sat in the sun.

In the Santa Lucia colonia, where neighborhood PRIistas are armed and dangerous, the word is out that there are white pickups patrolling the neighborhood. Groups like CIPO-RFM, who have their space in the neighborhood, are on watch. They, like so much of this movement, are non-violent, and resist the advances of paramiilitaries not with guns but with local, national, and international solidarity, as well as through the APPO-based community defense patrols.

Make the phone calls to spread the word! (or email) Tell them that Ulises Ruiz's governemnt is an assassin and that the PFP (and Ruiz) must leave Oaxaca!
