Today, February 19, 2001, President's Day, many people came out to Mt. Wachusett for a "Presidents' Day of Action". President George Bush, President Abraham Lincoln, and many others expressing their protest against the ski area expansion and the placement of profits before the earth, greeted skiers and snowboarders this morning in Westminster, MA. "You can really tell we reached some people…just from the fact that they won't even look in your eye or that they try to make themselves feel better by screaming an insult or something, that just shows that you're actually doing something, you're making them think at least, which is better than the opposite…", said Kindred Sparks from Charlemont, MA. Many felt it was the most effective and successful demonstration held at the Mountain so far, we got a chance to educate a lot of people and open their eyes to what's happening around them.
WMA (Wachusett Mountain Associates), the leaser of the state's land, is planning to expand the ski area and cut down 12.5 acres of mature forest that serves as a buffer zone for the 265+ acres of old growth. If these trees are removed the old growth forest will be exposed to the skiers and snowboarders as well as snow guns and regular wearing effects that the trails cause. Not only is the unique ecology of the old growth in danger, but Mt. Wachusett is also sacred ground to Nipmuc Native Americans who have lived on and around the mountain for over 10,000 years.
So as everyone at Mt. Wachusett learned from the big W himself this morning "Let's not beat around the Bush, Save The Trees." If you would like more information about how to get involved e-mail envirutopia (at) hotmail.com.
