Feds want thousands of US troops for DNC
18 Feb 2004
From the New York Daily News:
Federal officials have discussed bringing in U.S. troops to boost security at this summer's Republican National Convention - but the NYPD doesn't think it needs them. . .The number of troops mentioned during the briefing was in the thousands, sources said, adding that officials have discussed a similar strategy for the Democratic National Convention in Boston in July.

bring it on
Which is why it's not very bright to have open meetings about the DNC.

Plan in private.
WTF?

Who's having open meetings? What the fuck are you talking about?

If you wanna make accusations, come out with them and don't be hiding behind IMC forums.

First of all, troops and spies are two very different things. I would assume they will have spies infiltrating as well (if someone could post info about it that would be great). I think having secret meetings only furthers a sense of fear. It's also exclusionary. If you want to plan CD, do it in private with folks that you know and trust. But if we don't do outreach for public meetings, we'll be selling ourselves short. The point isn't to protest to be cool or self-righteous. The point is to change the way people think about the issues. It will require public planning and public events. It will require that organizers give up their anonymity and stand up to the intimidation.

Look, the state can always mass military force. That's part of their job. The question is whether protests are going to be intelligent actions that get out a message and build a movement, or if they're going to be storm-the-barricades-style actions with small groups that will get hurt and dismissed.
