More GM Test Sites Destroyed

Three field trials of genetically modified oilseed rape were destroyed by
activists in the last few days, according to a statement delivered
anonymously to the Genetic Engineering Network (GEN). The three sites, all
in Cambridgeshire, were part of the ŚNational Seed list‚ tests that the
crops are undergoing in order to obtain a license for commercial planting.

GEN has also been informed of six other GM oilseed rape sites that have been
attacked recently. These crop trashings have not previously been announced.

In the anonymous message given to GEN, anti-GM activists stated:

„We have taken practical action in the last several days to limit some of
the wanton vandalism of our countryside and our food supply by Aventis, the
world‚s biggest crop biotechnology company, with the complicity of the UK

„Following the admission by the seed industry itself that GM oilseed rape
contaminates conventional rape plants at a distance of 1.4km to 4 km, and
research suggesting that transgenic DNA can jump from one organism to
another, the British government should have acted immediately to cancel all
GM crop Śtrials‚ and destroy the plants involved.‰

„Given that the 'New Labour' government is acting on the best scientific
advice that money can buy, it must be aware that contamination of GM field
trials will irreversibly contaminate our environment and our food supply.
Their assumption is that the public will get used to the idea that
contamination has already occurred and will therefore not resist the future
commercial planting of GM crops. Meacher's statement this week that cross
pollination is inevitable shows that at least one Cabinet minister has done
some homework - it is time that the rest of them woke up to the fact that a
large percentage of the population is better informed on the matter than
they are. ‰

„This leaves citizens with the duty to take active steps to restrict GM
pollution. Our actions have taken place unobserved in order to avoid
wasting the time of the police and the courts and to allow the possibility
of further practical measures.‰

Notes Cambridgeshire Sites: Svalof Wiebul, Abbots Ripton; National
Institute of Agricultural Botany, Cambridge; New Farm, Whittlesford.

Other Sites: Hall Farm, Stoke Ash, Suffolk; Dalby Farms, Brigsley,
Lincolnshire; Laverton Meadows, Broadway, Worcestershire; Tilekiln Farm,
Albury, Hertfordshire; Chisil Orchard Farm; Great Chisil, Hertfordshire;
Wood Farm, Piccots End, Hertfordshire. All these sites were / are of
Aventis‚ oilseed rape (please note that GEN cannot vouch for the accuracy of
all information supplied to it).

As per the explanation given by Advanta Seeds for the GM contamination of
their oilseed rape seed supplies.

Recent German research finding that alien genes from GM oilseed rape pollen
had entered the chromosomes of bacteria in the guts of bees.
