Protest defends Amber Abreu: Unleash labor’s power to defend abortion rights

Supporters of Working Class Emancipation and the Internationalist Group picketed the Lawrence district court on Friday, February 23 in defense of Amber Abreu, a young Dominican immigrant who is facing multiple charges, possibly including murder, for having an abortion in January. While our numbers were small, and we were frustrated to learn that Amber’s hearing had been rescheduled from the 23rd to Wednesday the 28th, our efforts gained much-needed exposure for the growing defense campaign. WCE distributed many copies of our “Class Struggle Defense Bulletin #1.” The bulletin argues for unconditional defense of Amber Abreu on the basis of the struggle for women’s rights to free abortions on demand, warns against any reliance on the capitalist courts and the racist criminal in-justice system, and calls for labor action to shut down this outrageous frame-up. In contrast to the reformists, who were nowhere to be seen at Friday’s picket line, our defense campaign slogans and literature explain that there is no road to women’s liberation under capitalism, a system that depends on the oppression of women in the family and the workplace, and uses attacks on abortion rights to enforce the inequality of women by tying them against their will to decades of unpaid labor in the home. This defense campaign is part of the struggle for women’s liberation through socialist revolution. WCE also recruited five local volunteers for the defense campaign in Lawrence, and will intensify the propaganda campaign to mobilize class struggle defense for Amber. Contact us to receive our defense bulletins and to help with the defense campaign. As we go to press, we are planning to mobilize for another picket at the courthouse on Wednesday February 28th.
