ICE Raids in New Bedford, MA
09 Mar 2007
On Tuesday, March 6, officers from the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, also known as the ICE or ‘ice’, conducted a raid at a New Bedford factory that manufactures safety vests and backpacks for the U.S. Military. 327 workers at Michael Bianco, Inc., mostly women from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, were taken into custody by the ICE for failing to provide sufficient documentation of their immigration status. The ICE is being widely denounced for this military-style raid that has caused disruption and grief in local immigrant communities. Of primary concern are the many children and other family members who have been left without support while the detainees await ‘processing’ at a facility in the former Fort Devens military base, 100 miles from New Bedford.

On Wednesday, a press conference and demonstration was held outside the John F. Kennedy Federal Building in downtown Boston to issue three demands to the District Director of the ICE, Bruce Chadbourne. Maria Elena Letona of Centro Presente read these demands to over 75 demonstrators assembled outside in sub-zero temperatures.

Boston IndyMedia was there to record this audio piece, including an interview with a witness to the raids.
