Shut Them Down: The Democrats Will Wine and Dine. Maybe We Can Show Some Spine?
16 Mar 2007
The Democratic Party has managed to successfully ride the wave of opposition to the policies of the Bush administration. And yet, all they can offer us is a non-binding resolution to express their disapproval for an EXPANSION of this inhuman, deadly, unprovoked conflict. The monstrosity of Guantanamo Bay continues unchallenged; innocent civilians, citizen and undocumented alike, are still being indefinitely detained; and after four years they’re still telling us the troops will be pulled out “next year.” It’s enough to make you wonder about the honesty of politicians!

Call to Shut Down the Jefferson-Jackson-Bailey Dinner!

April 20th, 2007. 5:30 PM.

Connecticut Convention Center

100 Columbus Boulevard, Hartford CT

It’s time to quit playing nice and hold their feet to the fire. We need to make it clear that if the war in Iraq is not stopped, they will have to fight another war right here at home, against their own people! We will not allow the Democratic Party to publicly meet or raise funds without resistance until every occupying troop is brought home from Iraq, every soldier is cared for, and every cent owed to the Iraqi people in reparations is paid. It’s very well and good to say what’s popular; but if they can’t back it up with action, rest assured that we will!

The Connecticut Democratic Party will be hosting House Speaker Nancy Pelosi at their annual Jefferson-Jackson-Bailey Dinner. In response, the CLASH Collective is calling for a march from Bushnell Park to the Connecticut Convention Center, where we will barricade the entrances to shut down the event. The rallying time at the east end of the park will be at 4:30 PM on Friday, April 20th.

“We’ve lost the concept of social capital,” says Jerimarie Liesegang of Queers Without Borders. “So these rich people are throwing financial capital into the political machine, never to be put to social use,” referring to the obscene amounts wasted in every election campaign.

We do this as part of the long tradition of direct action politics that has brought the United States so far as a society, from the Labor Movement to the Civil Rights Movement to the Environmental Movement. When the political establishment does not hold up its end of the social contract, it is the right and responsibility of the people to bring down direct pressure and make our collective power felt. Many of us will march to the Convention Center to peacefully confront the Democratic Party to remind them of their obligations, while others will bear witness to ensure the safety of fellow-protesters at the hands of the police.

“We are calling on all people of conscience to take part in or support this action,” said Matt McLaughlin of the CLASH Collective. “In order to make this action a success, we need individuals and organizations to contribute their resources and abilities. All we ask for is a common respect, a cooperative attitude, and an understanding that any effective movement must be tactically diverse.”

Creating Local Autonomy and Solidarity in Hartford (CLASH) is an organization opposed to war, empire, identity-based oppression and class exploitation. In the upcoming month, we will be holding a series of public spokescouncils and trainings for those who wish to participate or learn more. Meetings will be held every Saturday at 3:30 PM at La Paloma Sabanera Coffee House and Bookstore, 405 Capitol Ave., in Hartford. Direct action trainings will be at the same location, immediately following the meeting.

We will also be having a press conference on Monday, March 19th to elaborate more on this action, and to commemorate the fourth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq. It will take place at 8:30 AM in front of 179 Allyn Street, Hartford, which is where the Democratic State Central Committee office is located.

This call to action has been endorsed by Queers Without Borders and People of Faith for Gay Civil Rights.
