Riots Greet the New Bonaparte
14 May 2007
Huffington Post called this the "Globalization of Electronic Voting", Sarkozy calls it a victory and blows a nationalistic horn: "...I will rehabilitate work, authority, morality, respect, merit. I will restore honour to the nation and national identity - I will bring French pride back to the French people." Riots continue.
They are storming the Bastille, rioting in the provinces, and have yet to elect a new legislature. when they do - it will certainly force a standofff with the new Bonaparte. This is what revolution looks like:
(see photos from Indymedia, where you will find coverage censored elsewhere.)

According to Bob Fitrakis and Harvey Wasserman of The Huffington Post:

"Sarkozy is a hard-edged authoritarian whose intense anti-immigrant rhetoric matches his support for the American war in Iraq and his avowed intent to slash France's social service system, including a public health program widely considered among the best in the world.

Like the balloting in Ukraine, the U.S., Scotland and Mexico, Sarkozy's victory was marred by angry, widespread complaints about dubious vote counts whose discrepancies always seem to favor the rightist candidate. Throughout France, the cry has arisen that the conservatives have done to Segolene Royal what Bush/Rove did to John Kerry."
