Merrimac, MA Residents & Other Northern Essex County Residents
01 Mar 2001
The time has come for organization against development and urban sprawl in Northern Essex County! All Merrimac, Amesbury, Newburyport, Salisbury, Haverhill, West Newbury, Groveland, Newbury, and Georgetown residents PLEASE READ.
It is clear that sprawl has been hitting our cities and towns hard for the past 10 years. The massive surge of development Northern Essex County has caught many of the towns -- especially poorer ones -- by surprise. Our beautiful open space is being sold off and destroyed by developers that could care less about their poor architecture and design, let alone the environment.

It is my hope that the Summer of 2001 will see large-scale organization against this attack on our rural lifestyles. I am forming the Northern Essex Coalition Against Development (NECAD), which is a democratic, grassroots, nonprofit organization with no hierarchy in which all members have equal power in the decision-making process regarding organization and protest. Our towns can't do it alone. We must work together. Amesbury residents must come together with Merrimac residents, Haverhill residents must join hands with Georgetown residents, and West Newbury residents must support Salisbury residents -- we are all facing the same problem and must fight it togehter.

The goal of NECAD is to bring together the towns of Northern Essex and organize a resistance that will make it clear that we do not want urban sprawl destroying our cities and towns. Due the region's relatively small population, such an organization is vital. Merrimac, for instance, only has 5,900 residents, and therefore needs help from Amesbury's 16,000 or so residents. This applies to other towns, as well.

If you are a Northern Essex resident, and are interested in becoming a member of NECAD, please email me at (aschlosser (at) proctornet.com). Membership is free, and you will receive a monthly NECAD newsletter and become a member of the weekly NECAD mailing list and be able to take part in organization discussion. As of now, the goal is to organize for massive action over the summer. This organization is open to people of all ages (young people are welcome!), groups, sex, race, and color. It is all-inclusive because the destruction of our open space affects all of us regardless of background.

Please join today!
