Cops Investigate Security Guard Shootout
27 Aug 2007
Sunday, August 26, 2007

A gun battle between an armed Alliance Security guard and a suspected gunman erupted early yesterday morning after the guard was fired on, prompting him to shoot back, Boston police said.

The investigation is ongoing, but it appears the security guard witnessed a shooting and was attempting to stop the suspect when he was fired upon, a police source said.

The victim of that shooting was shot at 1:28 a.m. on Brunswick Street in Roxbury. He was taken to Boston Medical Center, where he was in serious condition with a gunshot wound to the back, police said.

The Boston Police Department’s Firearm Discharge Team is investigating the shooting, and the guard’s gun has been impounded as evidence, which is standard procedure.

Police Department spokeswoman Elaine Driscoll said Boston police Commissioner Ed Davis will review the guard’s permit to carry a firearm, also procedure.

With uniformed police stretched thin, there are at least a dozen armed Alliance Security guards who patrol private property for city landlords. But they have been criticized in the past for being undertrained and overly aggressive.

A Herald review prompted the BPD to rewrite its rules regarding the special police powers given to security guards.

In September 2005, three Alliance Security Guards were charged with felony assault for pulling out a gun and threatening to shoot a Dorchester man who they accused of trespassing as he was retuning home. The charges were dropped.
