NIH PUBLIC MEETING - Thursday, September 20

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is now accepting public comments on their federal environmental impact statement and will hold a public hearing on September 20 to hear comments from the Boston community. ** This event is a KEY TIME to show the NIH the depth of the widespread opposition to the BU BioLab. **

PLEASE PLAN TO ATTEND! We really need to pack the house to show NIH, the government body that awarded BU the money to build the biolab, that Boston residents know the lab is not a safe or sound choice for Boston or any other city!

If you are coming from Roxbury, the South End, or South Boston and you need transporation to the hearing, call Klare at 617.442.3009 to find out about free bus transportation.

Please mark your calendars now, and look for more information from us soon on this important event.

WHEN: Thursday, September 20, 7-9 PM
WHERE: Fanueil Hall, downtown Boston

CRITICAL BIOLAB OPEN HEARING-SHOWDOWN TIME!!
On Thursday September 20 (Tomorrow!!) at 7 PM at Faneuil Hall

Dear Friends,

Many of you know and have been involved with the campaign to stop the construction of a level 4 bio-lab in Roxbury/South End.
Tomorrow there will be a hearing tomorrow there will be a hearing to voice concerns etc on the latest report published by the National Institutes of Health stating that the lab posed no threat to the neighborhoods it would be in or the greater Boston area.

The report, HOWEVER, was conducted by the NIH itself. There can clearly be no accountability when the same insitution that is funding the lab conducts a survey to asses the safety concerns of hundreds of residents and nieghbors!

It is VERY IMPORTANT to fill the hall with people who object to this biolab being built in the South End. You may testify if you wish so be there early-but it is not necessary to testify. JUST BE THERE.

IN THE PAST BU HAS PACKED THE HALLS WITH THEIR PEOPLE SO COME EARLY, AS EARLY AS 6:30 PM

The NIH report is over 300 pages long but we hope to send out a summary and anlysis. Look for it. There will definitely be a flyer with talking points at the door.

One point we can all raise at the hearing is that while NIH's siting criteria for BSL4 labs include the absence of substantial community opposition, they have been ignoring the community response to this lab for almost five years. Senators Clinton and Schumer in New York have just announced their opposition to siting a BSL4 lab on Plum Island in Long Island Sound. Their reason: it's too close to New York City! It's time our Senators defended our right to be safe and secure in our community. It's time for NIH to acknowledge and respond to our opposition.
