The incident happened shortly before 8 a.m. at the Haystack Apartments.

Richard England, 24, went to a neighbor’s apartment trying to get help but no one was home and he then telephoned his girlfriend to tell her he had been stabbed, police said.

Police found him lying outside a doorway with multiple stab wounds. The victim’s girlfriend also was there, covered in blood and attempting to perform CPR on him, authorities said. She told officers she rushed there after receiving a call from England, saying he was being attacked.

“He called her and said he was being stabbed, but he did not release who was doing it,” said Lt. Kim Price.

Detectives said they were pursuing leads but no arrest has been made. They said they believe the victim knew his assailant but no motive was disclosed.

England was among a group of 125 airmen in the 8th Air Force who deployed to Iraq in 2003 for three months to help ground troops in the ongoing war.
