Reporting from Occupied Iraq: Baghdad Correspondent Dahr Jamail To Speak About His Experience Covering the Missing Stories of Iraqis Under Occupation
Sunday March 21, 2004
3 PM, Veggie Planet: Club Passim,
47 Palmer Street, Harvard Square

Dahr Jamail, a journalist for The NewStandard, recently spent 9 weeks in Iraq, reporting the effects of privatization on the Iraqi people, the resulting economic crisis that plagues the country, the violent insurgency against the US occupation, the heavy-handed tactics of US-led forces against the Iraqi people, and many other topics.

Jamail's coverage of the situation in Iraq is unique--it's the type of reporting that you do not get out of the press room at a hotel in Baghdad, or by treating the US military's official version of events as truth. Jamail talks to Iraqis who witness events; he confirms the number killed and injured by the US military by visiting hospitals; he goes to view first hand the results of Bechtel's no-bid sanitation contracts. It's real investigative on the ground reporting--the kind you won't find on CNN, NPR, or ABC.

Jamail will share stories and photos from his November 2003 to January 2004 work in Iraq covering the daily experiences of Iraqis as a reporter for an independent media organization. Dahr's presentation, which will include numerous photographs, covers the following topics:

* Powerpoint presentation with photos!
* US military detaining Iraqi school children
* US military and media misrepresenting casualty counts
* Corporations not fulfilling their obligations in Iraq
* Iraqi Infrastructure still in tatters
* US Military illegally detaining Iraqis, and searching/destroying homes during raids
* US military using collective punishment and other Israeli style tactics
* What happens to Iraqis who demonstrate against US policy in Iraq

Working as an independent journalist in Iraq The NewStandard's editors will also speak about the start-up of their unique publication. This event is a fundraiser for Jamail's April return to Iraq and The NewStandard's launch. For more information or to make a donation, visit

The NewStandard is an independent, online newspaper currently fundraising for its full launch. Its staff has organized this tour in order to bring un-reported and underreported stories of the US Occupation of Iraq to the American public and to fundraise for Jamail's return trip to Baghdad and The NewStandard's start-up.
