* After the militant Islamic party, Hamas, won the 2006 Palestinian election, the Bush administration orchestrated a counter-offensive to force Hamas out of the Palestinian government.

* A former KGB agent turned Russian arms trafficker, was arrested in Thailand by investigators posing as buyers from the Colombian guerilla group Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC.

*The number of homeless in New Orleans has doubled since Hurricane Katrina ravaged the city. The bulk of 52,000 rental housing units destroyed have not been replaced, and hundreds of liveable units of public housing have been destroyed.
