Sandy Hill Energy Sufficiency: April Fossil Fool's Day in Ottawa

Sandy Hill residents holding their first meeting on energy sufficiency
Tuesday April 1, 2008 – 7:45pm-9:45pm - Sandy Hill Community Centre

Sandy Hill neighborhood in Ottawa Ontario is organizing its first meeting on Energy Sufficiency to brainstorm ways of helping their community become energy sufficient.

Among other things, they plan on asking government to 1. start fully subsidizing installation of a mix of renewable technologies on each and every roof in Ontario and to 2. close down radioactive and fossil fuel operations in the province.

Government of Ontario should divert $40 billion tax dollar subsidies from four proposed radioactive nuclear reactors and invest that money into a green economy: installing a mix of renewables on every roof in Ontario, achieving building efficiencies and building innovative green self-sufficient social housing communities. It is what is going to ensure our survival in the midst of environmental and energy crisis.

A mix of renewables installed on every building allowing connection to the power grid but independence from it ensures a reliable energy supply even in the case of power grid failures. Uninterrupted energy supply is of utmost importance for the poor, families with children, people with disabilities, those who are sick and those who cannot cope with abrupt changes in routines such as children with autism.

Sandy Hill community is learning a lot from other communal initiatives in energy sufficiency such as Toronto's West Initiative for Solar Energy (WISE), Riverdale Initiative for Solar Energy (RISE), award-winning solar laundry in Toronto's Beaches, a wonderful biodigester project proposal for Toronto's Moss Park community, Old Ottawa's East Solar Open House and Rideau Home hardware Building Center, a government approved vendor for solar and wind technologies.

Presently, government is giving some green incentives, but in the end, it is individuals themselves that have to purchase renewable technology. This makes it very difficult for renters and the poor to obtain such energy secure technologies.

Mindless pursuit of radioactive and fossil fuels of mass destruction will make Ontario into a toxic dump no one will really want to live in. Instead of exodus of eco-refugees from Ontario due to the province's tragic energy situation and its unpreparedness for upcoming environmental and energy crises, we are suggesting that the province go "purple " NOW!

Sandy Hill Energy Initiative recognizes the connection between energy and water. Current Frontenac Ventures uranium prospecting and proposed uranium mining will turn Ottawa's watershed into a radioactive dump. We stand against such abuse and destruction of environment and its peoples. Shame on Ontario Government for jailing those who peacefully stood up against such destruction and abuse.
