Chiapas & Oaxaca Report - from the field
11 Apr 2008
Local activists who have recently traveled in southern Mexico report on the social justice movements there as well as the increase in repression against Mayan autonomous communities by government supported paramilitaries.
MEXICO: CHIAPAS & OAXACA RISING!

Mexico and the United States have a closely intertwined history of domination and resistance. As rulers, both here and there, draw closer together with the "Security & Prosperity Partnership" (NAFTA-on-steroids) popular resistance is ever present. Three US-based activists will provide first-hand accounts of their (separate) visits to Oaxaca and Chiapas.

Corry Banton is a member of the Mexico Solidarity Network and spent time coordinating speaking tours and delegatations to Chiapas and Juarez with community members in resistance. She supports autonomy and is a member of the Lucy Parsons Collective and the Boston Interpreters Collective which advocates for language equity within the Boston Public Schools.

Brian O'Connell is an anti-war activist who recently participated in a delegation trip to Chiapas with Equal Exchange, a fair trade coffee cooperative that he works for. Brian
helped start the Stop the Wars Coalition.

Pam Cataldo is an anti-war and immigrants rights activist from Chili. A native of Latin America, she recently visited Mexico and attended the World Social Forum. Pam has done extensive organizing with Socialist Alternative
