On Tuesday, May 20th, 2008 at the Boston Center of the Arts from 6pm to 8 pm, local businesses and neighbors will join with young people to support youth programs in the South End/Lower Roxbury community.
The South End/Lower Roxbury neighborhood is home to 5,000 children and teens, and 14 housing developments. The 40+ youth programs here vary from national after-school programs to innovative local teen arts programs. Silent & live auctions of art by children and teens to benefit their neighborhood’s Youth Workers’ Alliance. |

The Youth Workers’ Alliance (YWA) weaves these resources together to provide the best possible opportunities for all young people.
During the past year, the YWA has trained 25 youth workers in trauma-response; provided grants to 9 agencies for cross-turf programming; advocated for increased summer jobs for youth and more streetworkers to support high-risk youth; and offered professional networking and resources to the many youth workers whose daily job is to support young people.
By building collaborations across turf boundaries, we help young people stay safe. While the South End/Lower Roxbury was considered a hotspot when Boston’s violence rates began to soar, we have seen an 86% reduction in shootings over the past two years. Our network and collaborations have had an impact that has been recognized with awards from the Boston Police Department, the Pridelights/AIDS Action Committee and by our inclusion in the Catalogue for Philanthropy.
The Youth Shines! Art Auction enables everyone - young artists, residents, youth workers, and local businesses - to support their neighborhood together.
The YouthShines Art Auction is presented with support from the Boston Center for the Arts, and two neighborhood associations. Our sponsors include the Boston Redevelopment Authority and Citizen’s Bank.
Featuring both live and silent auctions of art donated by children 6 to 21 years, this event is hosted by David Brown of WCVB-TV. Latin percussion band Kabluna entertains the crowd, while they dine on delicious food from local caterers and restaurants.

Please Don't Feed the Trolls
Wikipedia defines an Internet Troll as: "An Internet troll is either a person who sends messages on the Internet hoping to entice other users into angry or fruitless responses, or a message sent by such a person." Boston IMC strives to provide both a grassroots media resource as well as a forum for people to contribute to a meaningful discussion about local issues. Please, when posting comments, be respectful of others and ignore those trying to interrupt or discourage meaningful discourse. Thank you.
