White Supremacist Sparks Anger and Protests in Connecticut
10 Mar 2001
Inside, Reverend Matt Hale attempted to preach to his followers. Hecklers made it nearly impossible, however; drowning him out. “If these individuals will believe in this racial equality of hocus pocus, then let them debate me in a public forum on this matter,” Reverend Matt Hale challenged. That angered ralliers and a near-riot ensued.
WALLINGFORD, Conn., March 10 – Dozens of white supremacists showed up to hear a neo-nazi leader speak at the town’s public library. However, they were outnumbered by hundreds of protestors who didn’t want to hear Matt Hale’s hate speech.

Police in riot gear were called in when the two sides clashed! Reverend Matt Hale of the World Church of the Creator in Illinois was invited by a handful of local supporters to come and spread his word of white supremacy. It gained loads of attention, prompting anti-hate and hate ralliers alike to show. In the end, it all made for a very bitter battle.

Anti-hate ralliers stood arm-to-arm, furious because they weren’t being allowed inside to here Matt Hale preach his beliefs. The ralliers ignored those orders and stormed the building anyway. Officers quickly preserved order though.

“I didn’t want to stop anything from happening. I just wanted to make sure our point of view gets out, but unfortunately the police have been spraying people in the face at point blank range with pepper spray,” David Bonan said. David Bonan arrived with a show of support spanning four states. They raised their anti-racism signs high and chanted their disgust.

Hecklers made it nearly impossible, however; drowning him out. “If these individuals will believe in this racial equality of hocus pocus, then let them debate me in a public forum on this matter,” Reverend Matt Hale challenged. That angered ralliers and a near-riot ensued.

“I think it’s a mess. I think it’s disheartening and sickening and I don’t think a person like Mathew Hale belongs in this country,” Marcia Bates said.

“The police were violent as well as the protestors were violent and neither side should have been. It should have been a peaceful protest,” David Siegel said.

Wallingford Police tell us that there were 100 officers on hand, both from the State Police Department and Wallingford Police Department, to maintain order. They all had riot gear. We’re also told there was one arrest. One person tried to enter the building with a gun, for which he had a permit, but was denied entry. There were no injuries, and because of that, this incident is being considered a huge success.
