Pro-Palestinian activists protested against "New England Celebrates Israel"
The 60th anniversary of the Nakba catastrophe in Palestine is nothing to celebrate.
From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free!
Twenty Anti-Zionist, Pro-Palestinian and Anti-Imperialist activists protested against CJP's "New England Celebrates Israel @ 60" event in Waltham on Sunday June 1.
Members of Boston Anti-Zionist Action and other Boston-area pro-Palestine activists were joined by Anti-Zionist Orthodox Jews from Neturei Karta International http://www.nkusa.org/.
We protested outside the Gann Academy where hundreds of Zionists were "celebrating" the 60th anniversary of their unilateral declaration of Jewish-supremacist rule in Palestine. We told the Zionists that Zionism is racism, Zionism is terrorism, Zionism is genocide, and that they should not be celebrating genocide. "Israel" has no right to rule over any part of Palestine.
A few more pictures and info from the Waltham protest are at http://rule19.org/pgallery/08-june1-neci.htm
At the same time in New York City there was a demonstration against the "Salute to Israel" parade. See http://nyc.indymedia.org/en/2008/06/97617.html
There was also a protest that day against a similar zionist "celebration" in Washington DC.
Below is the announcement that I sent out on behalf of Boston Anti-Zionist Action in advance of the protest.
Below that is a speech that Rabbi Yisroel Dovid Weiss of Neturei Karta gave at a Nakba commemoration event a few years ago.
Neturei Karta want to be clear that they were not protesting against the "United States" but only against "Israel". They pray for the peaceful speedy dismantlement of "Israel" as Neturei Karta's position is that Jews should not rule over Palestine or any other country.
I was going to put this additional material in comments, but comments seem to be broken.
All anti-zionists, anti-imperialists, people in solidarity with the Palestinian cause, anti-war activists and decent human beings in general please come
PROTEST against "New England Celebrates Israel"
Sunday June 1, starting at 12 Noon, on the sidewalk outside the Gann Academy, 333 Forest St, Waltham, MA
We will probably be protesting for several hours.
On Sunday June 1 2008, "New England Celebrates Israel", one of the biggest most offensive Zionist events of the year in the Boston area, will be happening in Waltham. This event is sponsored by CJP / JCRC (Combined Jewish Philanthropies / Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Boston), a Zionist pro-war racist anti-Muslim hate group that lobbies and propagandizes with a multi-million dollar annual budget provided by billionaires such as Patriots owners Bob & Myra Kraft. In addition to supporting Jewish-supremacist rule in Palestine and genocide against the Palestinians, CJP/JCRC also has been loudly advocating for war against Sudan, Iran and Lebanon.
This year the "celebration" is going to be an outdoor festival with camel and pony rides, jugglers & magicians, "Israeli" military exhibits and martial arts lessons, an interactive map of Palestine (which they call "Israel") to walk around on, Palestinian food that the Zionists call "Israeli food", etc.
The "celebration" is being held at the Gann Academy, a private Jewish high school on many acres of land next to Bentley college in Waltham. The mission statement of the school includes "The creation of the State of Israel is one of the seminal events in Jewish history. Recognizing the significance of the State and its national institutions, we seek to instill in our students an attachment to the State of Israel and its people as well as a sense of responsibility for their welfare.". In front of the main building they have 50-foot-tall flagpoles with large "Israeli" and "American" flags.
This year the Zionists are celebrating 60 years of brutality, genocide and war. It was 60 years ago that Zionist colonists and Zionist terrorist groups in Palestine drove nearly a million Muslim and Christian Palestinians from their homes and then declared the Zionist European-Jewish-supremacist colony in Palestine to be a "state" on 80% of the land of Palestine. The Zionists did this in defiance of even the United Nations. The UN had proposed that Palestine be partitioned with 56% of Palestine becoming a Jewish state and without any transfer of populations. The proposal was not implemented. Even the UN proposal would have been unfair as it would have instituted continuing colonial rule over the indigenous Palestinian Arabs in most of Palestine. However the Zionists used violent terrorism and aggression to go beyond the UN proposal to remove most of the Palestinians from their homes and lands and to steal 80% of Palestine. To the Palestinians these events were the Nakba, the Catastrophy, the ethnic cleansing and theft of their country.
The catastrophy against the Palestinians is continuing to this day, and is also being perpetrated by the Zionists against the people of other nearby countries. In 1967 the Zionists occupied the remaining 20% of Palestine, and are treating the Palestinians there with great brutality and repression. The Zionists prevent Palestinian refugees in 1967-occupied Palestine, in neighboring countries, and around the world from returning to their homes. Meanwhile Jews anywhere in the world who have no connection with Palestine are allowed and encouraged to settle in Palestine. Even within 1948-occupied Palestine, Palestinian Arabs are denied rights that Jews have. Much land is reserved for Jews only.
Over the past 60 years the Zionist regime in Palestine has militarily attacked neighboring countries such as Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon many times. The Zionists occupied a large part of Lebanon for decades and continue to occupy parts of Lebanon and Syria. The Zionists have also had some influence on "US" government decisions and plans to militarily attack Iraq, Afghanistan, Sudan, Iran, Somalia and Pakistan.
Please come protest against this evil "celebration" of racism and war on Sunday. Bring signs and banners and Palestinian flags.

Below is an email from Mazin Qumsiyeh from earlier this month that also explains "why we do not celebrate Israel", has some more detalis about Zionist apartheid and ethnic cleansing in Palestine, and that calls for protests against the "New England Celebrates Israel" event.

Subject: [HumanRights] May Day and a draft Nakba Fact Sheet to use in actions
It is May Day, a day when we celebrate empowerment and the success of average people challenging those who would profit by exploitation. A day when workers, activists, union members, and every human being enjoys a bit of sunshine, a bit of recognition, and a bit of fun. It is how workday got to be 8 hours. Here on the Green, in New Haven, Connecticut, people gather for music, food, educational events, tabling by peace groups, Children at the May Pole and so on. On May day, people dedicate themselves to take matters into our own hands just like those workers in Chicago in 1886 who helped us get good working conditions. What are the injustices of today that cry out for remedy and action. This particular May is very significant and calls for us to act on the largest remaining injustice that has been going on for sixty years. It is the largest remaining refugee population in the world and the source of violence that has spread around the world as those who want to protect a privileged status where willing to sacrifice Israelis and Palestinians and push for wars in Lebanon, Iraq, Afghanistan, and soon Iran and beyond (not to mention the devastating economic impact that is even bankrupting the American economy).
It is thus an abomination for this tiny minority to be "celebrating" the foundation of an apartheid state of Israel instead of commemorating 60 years of violence, ethnic cleansing, and dispossession. The draft fact sheet below can be edited and put on one or two-sided sheet to pass out at the many events held around the world. Feel free to use it to educate those who have no sensitivity for the tragic dispossession of the indigenous people of Palestine (Christians and Muslims) to make way for a militarized colonial state of Israel (that now has 30% of its children living in poverty while it spends billions of our taxes to oppress others). Here are examples of these "celebratory" events around the USA where you can pass out flyers and vigil for peace and justice (we can share events on listserves).
And of course we should and many will have our own events and not just educate those going to propaganda events. (Today I am speaking at Harvard University School of Government on the Nakba and we will also show a film, starting at 4 PM Starr Auditorium, Belfer Building).
WHY WE DO NOT CELEBRATE ISRAEL
Between December 1947 and December 1950, over 530 Palestinian villages and towns were destroyed. Half of the Palestinians were ethnically cleansed by underground Zionist forces even before Israel was unilaterally declared a state. Palestinians call these events of the late 1940s the Nakba (Catastrophe).
The Palestinian refugees are the largest remaining refugee population in the world. Seven million of the ten million Palestinians are refugees or displaced people. They are prevented from returning to their homes and lands even though International law and UN resolutions demand it.
The Israeli “Knesset” adopted a set of laws that are contrary to International law that ensured no refugees are allowed to return (as customarily happens at the end of a war) and that their land is confiscated for use by Jews only (“absentee property” laws). The removal of 75-80% of non-Jews from what became Israel by 1950 was a necessary but not sufficient condition for creating and maintaining a Zionist-defined Jewish state. What the nascent state did subsequently was expand its borders and continue to appropriate native Palestinian lands, expel many of them and discriminate against those who remained at all odds.
Israel has no constitution but promulgated a set of basic laws that govern it essentially “for the benefit of the Jewish people”. These laws recognize members of a particular religion (including converts) as nationals of the state regardless of where they live or their current citizenship. In Israeli law, all Jews are part of Am Yisrael (the people of Israel). To get papers of citizenship all they have to do is show up in the state and claim their automatic citizenship.
Israel is unique among the nations in not being a country of its citizens but of “Jewish people everywhere”. No other country defines itself as a country for members of a particular religion (including converts) regardless of where they live. No other country has supranational entities that have authority superseding state authority and native rights. For example, the Jewish National Fund is not a state agency but it has on its own website the amazing statement that “The Jewish National Fund is the custodian of the land of Israel on behalf of its owners, Jewish people everywhere.” 91% of the land (most taken from the 530 Palestinian towns and villages depopulated between 1947-1949) is not privately owned but turned over from the custodian of “absentee property” to the JNF for lease by Jews.
Israeli law considers one fourth of the remaining Palestinians (300,000 of the 1.3 million Palestinians with Israeli citizenship) as “present absentees”. This means that their land and/or homes were confiscated from them and turned to the Jewish Agency/JNF. By international law they are considered internally displaced people (refugees).
Israel maintains an illegal occupation and colonization of the West Bank and Gaza for 40 years. This includes: 133 illegal Israeli settlements, 562 military checkpoints, 610 flying checkpoints, Israeli-only roads and settlements built on Palestinian lands, denial of residency rights, 11,500 Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli jails and, just in the past 7 years alone, 35,000 more Palestinians were made homeless by home demolitions and land confiscations. The Gaza Strip was turned into a large concentration camp were 1.5 million Palestinians (most refugees) are held in a desert strip with what the UN Human Rights commissioner declared as “catastrophic” conditions.
Israel is funded to the tune of $5 billion (3 billion in direct aid, 2 billion other) from our (US) taxes and shielded from International law and basic human rights conventions by our government (e.g. 37 vetoes at the UN security Council). We thus hold special responsibility in this situation (and in the atrocities in Iraq that derive from it), which is not the same for example for Darfur, Sudan (where our government is not funding oppression but is actually at least verbally trying to stop it).
Israeli Artists’ declaration of 2002:
"If the state of Israel aspires to perceive itself as a democracy, it should abandon once and for all, any legal and ideological foundation of religious, ethnic, and demographic discrimination. The state of Israel should strive to become the state of all its citizens. We call for the annulment of all laws that make Israel an apartheid state, including the Jewish law of return in its present form"
"My awareness of the essential nature of Judaism resists the idea of a Jewish state with borders, an army, and a measure of temporal power, no matter how modest. I am afraid of the inner damage Judaism will sustain - especially from the development of a narrow nationalism within our own ranks, against which we have already had to fight strongly, even without a Jewish state."
Vladimir Jabotinsky, founder of Herut (later Likud Party of Israel) in “The Iron Wall: We and the Arabs"
"Every reader has some idea of the early history of other countries which have been settled. I suggest that he recall all known instances. If he should attempt to seek but one instance of a country settled with the consent of those born there he will not succeed. The inhabitants (no matter whether they are civilized or savages) have always put up a stubborn fight.” "
Ehud Olmert, 5 December 2003
"The formula for the parameters of unilateral solution are: To maximize the number of Jews; minimize the number of Palestinians; not to withdraw to the 1967 border and not to divide Jerusalem.”
Yitzhak Rabin, 23 October 1979
"We walked outside, Ben-Gurion accompanying us. Allon repeated his question, What is to be done with the Palestinian population?' Ben-Gurion waved his hand in a gesture which said 'Drive them out!'"
"it must be clear that there is no room in the country for both peoples . . . If the Arabs leave it, the country will become wide and spacious for us . . . The only solution is a Land of Israel, at least a western land of Israel, without Arabs. There is no room here for compromises . . . There is no way but to transfer the Arabs from here to the neighboring countries, to transfer all of them, save perhaps for Bethlehem, Nazareth, and the old Jerusalem. Not one village must be left, not one tribe. The transfer must be directed at Iraq, Syria, and even Transjordan. For this goal funds will be found . . . And only after this transfer will the country be able to absorb millions of our brothers and the Jewish problem will cease to exist. There is no other solution."
Israeli psychologist Avigail Abarbanel
"If a day comes, and I hope it does, when Israelis decide to stop living in denial, they will have to realise that real peace will only come through justice. Justice in this context means one thing, that the ideal of an exclusively Jewish state at the cost of an entire people might have to be abandoned. Only a bi-national state and a right of return for the Palestinian refugees will come close enough to rectifying some of the injustices committed in 1948 and since. Having been ethnically cleansed, this is also what the Palestinians are entitled to under international law and common human decency."
statement delivered by Rabbi Yisroel D. Weiss of Neturei Karta Int. at a rally in Times Square, New York City on May 14, 2004, organized by many major American-Muslim organizations in commemoration of Al-Nakba Day (The day of the creation of the 'State' of Israel)
Torah true Jews mourn the fifty six years of the illegitimate State of Israel in Palestine and express their solidarity and deep sympathy with the Palestinian People in their suffering and struggle against the Zionist oppression.
The practical outcome of Zionism in the form of the State known as ‘Israel’, is completely alien to Judaism and the Jewish Faith and has been and continues to be the cause of untold suffering and bloodshed both Jewish and non-Jewish.
With a continuing chain of events over more than half a century, ranging from the withholding of the ‘right of return’ from the Palestinian refugees and leading currently to such issues as the ‘wall’ and ‘extra judicial assassinations’, Zionism has proven to be one of the greatest desecrations of God’s name and the Jewish religion.
The Jewish Religion is a spiritual belief handed down through the generations for thousands of years. It is a basic part of the Jewish belief, to accept willingly, the Heavenly decree of exile affecting the Jewish People and not to try and fight against it or to end it by our own hands.
In practical terms, exile for us means that Jews must be loyal subjects of the countries in which they live and not attempt to rule over the established indigenous populations of those countries. The Torah certainly forbids us to form a State of our own. This applies whether in the world at large or in Palestine.
The Zionist movement, however, which was founded approximately 100 years ago based on secular nationalistic aims, was a complete abandonment of our religious teachings and faith in general, and in particular an abandonment of our approach to our state of exile and to the peoples among whom we live.
The ideology of Zionism is secular and atheistic and advocates taking the law into ones own hands by trying to force the outcome in the form of a State. Irrespective of the cost in life and property to anyone who stands in the way. The Zionist ideology is the antithesis of Jewish religious values and is an embarrassment and a disgrace to the Jewish People.
One must add to the wrongs of Zionism and the state of “Israel”, the fact, that in order to achieve an ill conceived nationalistic ambition, a shocking contravention of the Jewish Religious values of natural and humanitarian justice was committed, in setting up an illegitimate sectarian regime in Palestine, completely against the wishes and over the heads of the established population, the Palestinians, both Arab and God fearing Jew. This inevitably had to be based on illegal confiscation of property and loss of life.
According to the Torah and Jewish faith, the present Palestinian. Arab claim to rule in Palestine is right and just. The Zionist claim is wrong and criminal.
Our attitude to the ‘State of Israel’ is that the whole concept is flawed and illegitimate. It is a tragedy for the Palestinians and also for the Jewish people.
Furthermore, the Zionists have made themselves to appear as the representatives and spokespeople of all Jews, thus, with their actions, arousing animosity against the Jews. But, their claim is simply not true! Zionism is not Judaism. Zionists cannot speak in the name of Jews.
Finally, we stress that the connection between Arab and Jew goes right back into ancient history. Mostly the relationship was friendly and mutually beneficial. Historically, the situation frequently was that when Jews were being persecuted in Europe they found refuge in the various Arab and Muslim countries. Our attitude to Muslims and Arabs can only be one of friendliness and respect.
We are awaiting the annulment of Zionism and the peaceful, speedy, dismantling of the State of Israel, and would welcome the opportunity to dwell in peace in the holy land under Palestinian rule.
Ultimately we await the revelation of God’s glory through out the world, when all mankind will recognize the one God and serve Him together in harmony and happiness. AMEN
