Turning the Corner

One might say that during this time our executive office sold us out. A strong desire to invade Iraq pushed aside all reason and logic. More importantly it swept aside the trust Americans invest in elected officials to serve the best interests of those who elect them. They took away liberties and invested tax payer dollars in campaigns of unwarranted and unconstitutional surveillance of the very people who gave them those dollars and their positions. They quietly used signing statements to declare they had every right to ignore congress and rule as they pleased.
This behavior robbed Americans of the faith bestowed in their government that Washington will only send their sons and daughters into harms way at the utmost end of having tried all alternatives to war. Saddam Hussein posed no threat and had no connection to 9/11. Yet, we were led to believe if we did not act immediately our nation would be in imminent danger from a dictator who was sufficiently broken and reduced to being all talk.
Those who sold us these lies did so without care for average Americans. After all, few if any of their mothers, fathers, daughters or sons went to the front lines of Al Anbar or Baghdad. The decision to go to war in Iraq ran contrary to the best interests of ordinary Americans. We became fodder for blind ambitions which to this day have seen no end. We foot the bill for a war which spawned more terrorists than there were previous to the invasion, took resources away from the War in Afghanistan which after eight years is worsening and costs us billions per month while billions build up in Iraqi coffers.
Our constitutional civil liberties were stepped on carelessly and in the process the people who pay the taxes, do the work and elect the elected were treated as if they were of secondary or even thirdly importance. It is the majority of citizens that fight on the battle fields. They police the streets, put out fires and drive the ambulances. The constitution was written so all men could be free. That seed of genius spread around the world and inspired millions of people and nation upon nation. Are we to say now it was all just a bad idea?
What should we tell ourselves? Are the American people are not to be trusted with their own decisions? Were the founding fathers naive? The constitution was written to protect the rights of all to be free to think as they wish, act as they wish and pray as they wish as long as they do no harm to others or tread upon the rights of fellow citizens.
Through this we produced some of the best and brightest the world has ever seen. Not through heavy control by those who fear a free people. We didn’t become great as a result of being ruled by dictators afraid of the personal freedoms of others. In fact time has shown the mightiest of nations fall through the rule of the self obsessed. It happened through, among other things, the rule of those who became so inwardly focused they couldn’t see the blight on their front door as something more than to be stepped over or turned away from.
The nation gave a mandate this past election for a change away from the path of special interest greed and an executive office that spurns the interests of the people for those of themselves while attempting to placate the electorate with illusions of normalcy. We saw through it.
Everything was not alright. Something very wrong was happening although we could not always see the entirety of it. Our country was moving in directions against the constitution and against what most of us believe as Americans to be right. It will take some time, but let’s hope and work to get on track. With the last election it was truly shown the future is in our hands as citizens and voters. A president was elected to bring that change we can help by keeping our eyes open and on the ball.
