Anti-capitalists held the streets for nearly 3 hours this morning, despite low numbers (about 200) and severe police repression. As of 8:00 pm this evening, only 7 arrests have been made. |

Anti-capitalists set out early this morning to disrupt the IMF/World Bank meetings taking place in DC, stopping along the way to smash and redecorate bank and yuppie condo windows. Blockades, marches, and dance parties ensued shortly thereafter, with the first blockade beginning at approximately 7:30 am. Six people have been charged with felony destruction of property. The streets were held by anti-capitalists until nearly 10 am when blockaders, marchers, and dancers had converged and were heavily pepper-sprayed and beaten. It is reported that police used the bamboo-reinforced banners to beat people. At this time, one protester was taken away in an ambulance with a broken leg. Activists report that, after one cop knocked another over, ICE sprayed the group with pepper-spray heavily enough to cause two police officers to be taken to the hospital. One gentleman has been accused of pepper-spraying a police officer and consequently charged with assault on a police officer in relation to this incident, though eyewitnesses state that pepper-spray was not used by activists. It is reported that 2 additional activists were also hospitalized with less severe health conditions. More to come. |
