Radical problem: Anarchists may target DNC with violent protests
By Dave Wedge
Thursday, April 8, 2004

Wary of increasingly violent radical groups, authorities are bracing for a possible invasion of unruly party crashers at this summer's Democratic National Convention, including some underground extremists who endorse rioting and mayhem.

``What we're hearing from some groups is to direct violence at persons, including law enforcement,'' FBI spokeswoman Gail Marcinkiewicz said yesterday.

The Hub-based anarchist network BAAM has been hosting regular meetings at MIT ``to plan out resistance to the DNC.'' The group's name refers to ``the pleasant sound of authoritarianism being smashed,'' according to its Web site.

Anti-war and anti-capitalism, BAAM promotes rioting on the site, urging members to ``ALWAYS cover your face (bandanas and hats work great).'' The group also issues veiled threats against the police, the FBI, the IRS and locally based corporate giants like Fidelity, Citibank and Fleet.

``In event of war . . . attack the real enemy,'' the site states, alluding to bombing and providing addresses of Boston businesses and government agencies.

Another Hub-based anarchist cell, the Bl(A)ck Tea Society calls for ``direct actions to confront the Democratic National Convention in Boston.'' The group's rallying cry, according to their Web site is: ``No DNC: finish the american revolution.''

Increasingly violent and organized national extremist groups that could show up at the DNC - such as the Animal Liberation Front and the Earth Liberation Front - are known to wear full riot gear, lock themselves to buildings, use slingshots to shoot flames, bleach and feces and call in bomb threats.

``People are welcome to come here and express themselves, but they are not welcome to come here and destroy property or put anyone in harm's way,'' Boston police spokeswoman Mariellen Burns said.

Also in the planning stages is a march of anarchists, anti-globalization activists and other fringe groups from the DNC to the Republican National Convention in New York City, which is a month after the July 26-29 Boston event.

Hub authorities are preparing based on violent clashes at past high-security events, including the 1999 WTO riots in Seattle and the 2000 RNC and DNC in Philadelphia and Los Angeles respectively. Both 2000 conventions saw sporadic unrest and hundreds of arrests. In Philadelphia, the violence was more widespread with protesters reportedly using urine- and acid-filled Super Soaker guns on police, lighting fires and blocking traffic.

I know a few anarchists that will NOT be there
08 Apr 2004
Some "anarchists" in this area prefer to do all their protesting from the safety of their homes. Writing articles, filing lawsuits and generally using the system that they seek to destroy to gain personal wealth.

Any REAL Anarchist would be out on the street, peacefully protesting and being visible as a person who stands up for everything he believes in.

Same Rhetoric As Usual

It was obvious to everyone involved in this project that it was only
a matter of time before the war of lies came down upon us. This sort
of defamation and slander has preceded every major anti-capitalist protest
in recent history. Their main motivation for discrediting and attacking
anarchists is to provide justification and cover for massive police and
state brutality that will surely accompany this (and most every other)
sizable anti-capitalist convergence. These lies will be used to legitimize
attacking and arresting the people of Boston and those who come to aid
in the defense of our community from the invasion of paramilitary police
directed to protect the political bosses from the people they claim to
represent.

Uh... y'know, sometimes people meet at universities because the space is free. Doesn't necessarily mean they go to the school, just that they are smart enough to secure free spaces.

That geeky MIT-associated image may be an unforseen benefit to the "anarchist" anti-authoritarian movement.

In Boston.

Consider the reputation of MIT for recruiting and producing geeky, brilliant, educated progressive minded individuals. Granted, many MIT folks contribute to the consumer culture that we're infected with, but there is an implied positive association by the mention of their name and Black Tea Society in this poorly researched mainstream news article.

And, unless this particular movement **isn't** trying to recruit new people to their mentality... association with MIT, as a free use of space for their meetings, or as a platform for the group & individuals involved to speak their piece and recruit new people to their cause, is a great idea. We need MORE geeks. And housewives and plumbers and any 'ol bodies who see that this political system is corrupt, and who are willing to consider alternatives to the status quo.

Pocket calculators and balaclavas? It could happen!

i love how a) the herald makes NO pretense of objectivity whatsoever, b) they don't interview or quote a SINGLE organizer, only cops, and c) they start off with a picture of fucking GENOA.

This is all fake. This "Upper Crust" person is either a cop or a Stalinist boob.

A fake article? There's a link to the Boston Herald. They actually did run the article. Or did you mean the article is full of lies? Well, what do you expect from the mainstram media? Don't blame UpperCrust for that. Presumably, he/she was just reposting the article here to let us know what was going on.

Dont shoot the messenger here. It's not like I wrote the damned thing.

This was a real article--saw it in the Herald. And BAAM and/or the Black Tea Society really need to respond to it with more than the statement below. This is serious. If the powers that be try to define you as they wish to, you need to actively define yourself. If there isn't an active public campaign to respond to this slander by saying positively who BAAM and BTS are, then the groundwork is laid for repression this summer.
