Today advocates will challenge Representative Markey to vote against the defense supplemental spending bill that will be considered in
Congress in the coming days. They argue that the bill amounts to a $108 billion ‘blank check’ for the International Monetary Fund (IMF),
as well as U.S. wars.

The Administration pushed for inclusion of the massive IMF package after the bill had already passed the House of Representatives. While
the Senate included the funding, leadership in the House seems to be
having trouble finding enough votes to pass the measure between anti-
war democrats and members from both parties who oppose the IMF
elements. Local activists today will urge Rep. Markey to announce
publicly that he will vote no because it includes the IMF provisions
and open-ended war spending.

At 2:30 today, a contingent of area doctors and activists will go to
the Medford office of Rep. Markey and deliver a giant “Blank Check,” asking him to vote “no” on the war supplemental because of the IMF and War Funding.

"The IMF is, at this very moment, promoting policies that are the
opposite of what President Obama has pushed for here in the US—forcing
impoverished countries to cut spending, lay off doctors and teachers,
close hospitals. Congress should not be slipping a blank check for
the IMF into war legislation, so we’re calling on Rep. Markey to
oppose the bill unless this is changed,” said Dr. Chris Curry a
physician at Boston Medical Center.

The IMF funding was presented as necessary to stabilize the economies
of developing countries. However, the vast majority of the IMF’s loans
made since the onset of the economic crisis require countries to do
the opposite of stimulus spending, such as: deficit reductions--
including freezes in social spending and unemployment benefits, tax
increases and service rate hikes--and interest rate increases, which
stifle growth.

The Administration and House Democratic leadership are trying to
pressure liberal Democrats into voting for the war spending, together
with the IMF money, by indicating that their most important other
legislative priorities will be held up until it is passed.

“No member of Congress should even consider just quickly passing this
money without even a hearing about the damage being done to
impoverished nations by the IMF. The IMF is so harmful to healthcare
around the world, I just hope Congress won’t sign over this massive
blank check so they can move on to US healthcare reform,” said Prof.
Brook Baker of Northeastern University School of Law. "Of course,
Massachusetts
Congress people should also vote against the bill because constituents sent
them and
President Obama to Washington with an anti-war platform."
