7:00 pm, at the Lucy Parsons Center
549 Columbus Avenue, Boston

Come spend an evening with Lois Meyer and see lots of pictures from communities all over that southern state in Mexico. For the past ten years Lois has been working closely with the Coalition of Indigenous Teachers of Oaxaca. She has spent much time there, including a whole year just recently. She is intimately familiar with the teachers’ struggles, and with the broader political situation there. This should be a very interesting presentation for all those who have been following the events in Oaxaca since the famous federal troop attack on the striking teachers encampment in the central square of Oaxaca on June 14, 2006 (she was there!) which triggered a six-month uprising and mass mobilization for liberation in the state. For those new to the issue, this can serve as a nice introduction to this significant struggle. In the States, she is professor of education at the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque. She is in Boston for three days only, while working to wrap up compiling and editing a collection of exchanges between Noam Chomsky and various Latin American writers.
