STREET PERFORMER ARRESTED AT ANDOVER PROTEST
12 Apr 2004
For immediate release -- 4/12/04

Contact -- Sean Donahue, Massachusetts Anti-Corporate Clearinghouse 978-683-3967

NY MAN WILL APPEAR IN COURT FOR PUTTING BUSH DUMMY ON SIDEWALK
ACTIVISTS CHARGE ARREST PART OF PATTERN OF POLICE
HARRASMENT AT DEMONSTRATION

ANDOVER/LAWRENCE -- Leslie Gabriel, founder of VoteBushOut.biz has been travelling the country dressed as boxer Rocky Balboa, taking on the same opponent in each town -- "The Lyin' King," a punching bag made up to look like President George W. Bush. Tommorow morning he will appear without the dummy, facing a new opponent in Lawrence District Court where he will be arraigned on charges of obstructing a sidewalk and disorderly conduct.

On Saturday, Andover police arrested Gabriel during a brief argument at a peace demonstration outside the IRS bulding in Andover. Police has asked Gabriel not to put the dummy down on the sidewalk, so he placed the dummy on a small red wagon. When police attempted to confiscate the dummy, he asked them twice how he could retrieve it. At that point they placed him under arrest. Gabriel was released later that day after posting bail. "The Lyin' King " remains in custody.

Sean Donahue of the Massachusetts Anti-Corporate Clearinghouse, one of the organizations that sponsored saturday's "Death and Taxes" march from the IRS to Raytheon to protest military spending and the occupation of Iraq, said "The police had no reason to arrest Leslie Gabriel. He was taking part in a light-hearted act of theater that didn't harm anyone. He wasn't blocking the sidewalk. Noone was walking down the sidewalk, and had the dummy been in anyone's way he would have moved it. He just put it down on the wagon for a minute to rest his arms."

Donahue went on to say that the arrest was part of a pattern of petty harrasment against peaceful protesters in Andover that became clear as events unfolded on Saturday. "When we arrived in Andover, the police had set up no parking signs along roads where on street parking is allowed on every other day of the year. They ran the license plate numbers of legally parked cars on other streets and photographed peaceful demonstrators. This is an annual event, we are an organization with a history of nonviolent action. There was no reason for this kind of behavior."

The Massachusetts Anti-Corporate Clearinghouse has retained legal counsel and plans to file a complaint with the Andover Police Department regarding Saturday's events. The organization is also keep open the possibility of litigation.

The Andover police have in their midst many former drug users and drug dealers. Look into the past of many of Andover's finest and you will find out that some were mid level drug dealers before they became police officers and most were heavy drug users.
