NATIONAL BUY NOTHING DAY
FRIDAY NOV. 27,2009
The Friday after Thanksgiving, the busiest shopping day of the year,we encourage people to boycott the capitalistic commercialization of Christmas; don’t go shopping today. Instead, donate whatever you would have spent on gifts, to organizations that work to stop war, world hunger, and social injustice.Statistically, Americans are going to spend billions this year on Christmas gifts and decorations--it would only take a fraction of that amount to end world hunger permanently and save the lives of the 30,000 children who die each day of hunger. What greater gift could one give for Christmas than to save lives and bring world peace? Just send your loved ones a Christmas card instead, noting inside that instead of a gift you are donating in their name to a peace-social justice organization.
On Christmas Jesus was born to bring “peace on earth, goodwill to people”,not to make the retail stores richer. Whether one celebrates Christmas,Hannukah, Ramadan, or Kwansa---what possible connection is there of the nonmaterialistic, spiritual dimension of these holy days to spending money and buying things?
Take a brave, bold stand for humanity this Christmas---don’t buy anything!!
Some suggested organizations to donate to:
Oxfam,American Friends Service Committee, Save the Children, Christian Children’s Fund, your local homeless shelter,or any group you know of that works for humanitarian causes and peace/social justice.
“Happy Xmas--War Is Over !!“ (John Lennon song). We wish you, your loved ones, and the world a merry Christmas and peace on earth!! |
