more on letter, after boston protest |

...went to the rally in boston. it was enlightening.
the bottom line is that Starbucks has a lot to account for, and a nice-sounding memo is just that. and not necessarily anything more.
a lot of people at the protest in boston hadnt even seen the Orin Smith letter. they were suprised that it even existed. some were pleased. some warned against being duped. i merely posted it above because i wanted to make sure we were all informed. only from there can we make informed decisions.
(some, elsewhere in IMC discussions, seemed to accuse people who were asking about the letter of being stupid, or being fooled. one person write to another who was wondering if the news was a sign of something good, 'you should be shot.' and that's all they wrote. so this has been divisive. that's too bad.
i hope we'll all question everything we read, wherever we read it, and not just write everything off as a lie, or as a plant from 'Them.'
the most important thing of all is that we all for discussion and education among ourselves. which means, when someone comes with a question or an idea, NOT just writing them off. it's happened here. let's not. let's try to contribute and foster each other's interest in making this cause and causes like it grow, and succeed. we'll need new people to do that.
also, there may be another lesson learned here: if Starbucks makes all these promises, we shouldnt just say, 'More lies! Why listen?' we should look at that as an opportunity to meet with them, have human interactions, and say, face-to-face, You Must Change. ...starbucks just giving us lip service (if that's what they're indeed doing) may suck, but it may also be an opportunity to hold them accountable for going back on their pledges. if they say they care and agree with us, let's PUBLICIZE that; that way, if they DO back away from their promises, the world will know and the lies will be so obvious that we wont have to fight so hard to get people to listen to us.
and, as one person in boston said, 'if we can spend time organizing a protest like this, then someone should be able to find the time to meet with the CEOs and deal with them directly.'
peace.
