A group of anti-war protesters marked the anniversary of September 11 by washing the American flag at Park Street Station---the site of their weekly protest of the many US wars around the world. The activists were trying to wash the lies and crimes out of the flag. The most important lie, especially on this anniversary, they said, is that we are under attack and need to fight back against "terrorism".
"The 'war on terror' is a big hoax, and the real reasons the US is fighting are never explained to the people," said Susan McLucas, who also talked about how it seemed that the US wasn't really defending itself, with Donald Rumsfeld carrying stretchers at the Pentagon and Bush continuing to read to school children on 9/11. David Lewit was more specific about the collapse of Building 7 at the World Trade Center and how it seemed unlikely to have been caused by debris from the other towers, especially the way it fell so cleanly. Phoebe Knopf spoke about Fallujah, the Iraqi city that was attacked so fiercely and with such toxic weapons that one in four children is born with birth defects. Other speakers talked about the economic cost of the wars and how that affects people in this country, where services are being cut all the time. Many were disappointed that things are not more different under Obama, who had promised such change.
Some people watching the demonstration were offended to see the flag being washed, but most reaction was positive. |

Washing only cleans so much. If you really want to clean that flag, BURN it. |
